It was only in sifting through MLS Listings (I am a local REALTOR in Fredericton) that I came to know that one of my favorite professors has passed on to new adventures and is no longer with us. I immediately started looking at all the photos and for some reason knew to look for a pool, a lap pool, to be specific, and then, there it was. Only then, did I have the heart to look up an obituary notice. I was shocked and then sad. I am a proud BPE Grad of UNB Class of '95. One of my favorite classes was taught by Dr. Burkard, Tear & Care. I learned to love my program more when I knew how to care for my future students and anyone who would let me tape their appendages. LOL. Dr. Burkard also saw my somewhat talent in the pool and I vowed to keep up my skills after taking his swimming class that we were all required to take. I even went on to take an advanced swimming class! I have not kept my promise to myself to keep up my skills, but am a much more proficient swimmer because of him and his ways to teach with confidence to his students. He could see that I had a mean back stroke and I excelled with his encouragement. My days at UNB were brighter when he was around and he took genuine care in his students from what I can recall of the 'good ol' days'.
My sincerest condolences to everyone affected with this loss. He did make a difference to many, and that included me.
Sending love and light.

Jeff left such a legacy and memories at UNB. I will never forget the energy he brought to the room. We have so many positive work memories to reflect on. I have heard his former students sing his praises, and rightfully so.
We are so proud to have spent time with Jeff.

I am surprised and saddened to hear of Jeff's passing. Jeff was one of the first people I met when I was a student in the old BPE program at UNB. Jeff was enjoyable as an employer (SMA lifeguards) and an Instructor (aquatic activity courses) during my time at UNB in the late 80's and early 90's. Each conversation with Jeff always included a laugh and he genuinely wanted to know how you were personally and as a student.

I remember working on the ELP world map. In true ELP style, we were working late into the night. I had done the outline. Now it was time for a collection of brushstrokes to fill the in the empty space across the continents. Each person explored possible expressions on paper, finding the brushstroke that best expressed who they were at that moment. Jeff's brushstroke captured his essence then as well as across his life - a strong vertical stroke: practical, present, grounded. I chose it to be the foundation on top of which the rest of us could flourish.
I also remember not making it to Mary's funeral. When I next saw Jeff, he graciously took the time to read me all the eulogies. It is a gift I treasure.
Jeff,
I don't think we are quite ready to let you go although there is consolation that this means you can be reunited with Mary. It is remarkable that even in your passing, your solid presence and thoughtful preparations are supporting us while we grieve. I feel anchored and my life fortified in ways I could have never imagined. Amazing. Thank you. I hope to pay it forward so your influence can continue to make this world a better place.
Big hugs. Please send my love to Mary.

Jeff was a wonderful colleague in the Faculty of Kinesiology! His genuine interest and support for students and his positive attitude contributed significantly to the faculty. Jeff always had time for students and colleagues, was a great listener, and always took the high road. He lived by example. We will miss him!

Living in Burlington, Shelley and I were always excited when Jeff travelled to Buffalo to spend time with his father. Lots of great memories of wonderful evenings with Jeff and his dad (particularly suppers at the Buffalo Brew Pub). I even tried the fried bologna sandwich which Jeff recommended. He claimed that EVERYONE in Buffalo loved them, although I do not remember his father sharing his enthusiasm about them. We were blessed to have had these times together.

I am very saddened to hear of Jeff’s passing. He was a wonderful friend of my parents, Lawson and Helen Stockford. Through the years he visited my family with Mary, bringing with him his beautiful spirit of help, and kindness. He planned and chauffeured yearly fall trips to PEI. Jeff and Mary provided friendship to my parents that was above and beyond! Jeff was a driving force behind a writing group that was held at my father’s home on a monthly basis. Jeff would arrive with lunch for my parents. He provided food for the body and food for the soul. Jeff’s quick and astute mind kept my father engaged! When my Father passed away last year, Jeff stepped forward immediately and wrote a meaningful obituary. He spoke at my father’s funeral, bringing up so many memories. Jeff’s presence always gave comfort and calm, as well as a great deal of fun! I am forever grateful for his love and care of my parents in particular. He was a very special person to many, many people. Jeff will be missed by many. He lived a life of service and love.

It is with much sadness that I heard this news of Jeff's passing. I have known Jeff since he arrived in Fredericton back in the 70's. I was very fortunate to have worked very closely with him in the undergraduate program for a few years before I retired. He was such a kind, compassionate and caring person. I will always remember his laugh. My condolences to his family and friends.

One of the best classes I had at UNB was led by Jeff. He was truly passionate about facility planning and design and would take us out of the classroom to look at buildings. One class he had arranged for John Meagher to come in as a guest speaker. It was a great experience for all! Years later I was fortunate to work with Jeff at UNB, I was struck by his kindness, ability to listen and thoughtful advice. It felt like I was learning something each time we talked. Jeff was loyal to his staff, committed to providing opportunities to students and was giving of his time. Please accept my sincerest condolences on his passing. He will be greatly missed.
