Obituary of Marlene Goodine

Marlene Weatherbie-Goodine Marlene Goodine, of Marysville, NB, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012. Born on September 16, 1939 in Charlottetown, PEI, she was one of nine children of the late William and Priscilla Weatherbie. Marlene was an accomplished step dancer, and was already a veteran of the stage when at age 13 she attracted the eye of Don Messer, then preparing a troupe for a summer tour of the Maritimes. Marlene went with him that summer and in 1955 when the show moved its base from Charlottetown to Halifax to become TV’s Don Messer’s Jubilee, she was called over for several guest appearances. That year after winning her first PEI dancing championship, she went on a cross-Canada tour with Messer and brought audiences to their feet with applause wherever she performed. In 1986, she was the first step dancer to be inducted into the New Brunswick Country Hall of Fame, along with Charlie Chamberlain, Gary Morris and Freddy McKenna. It was during a Messer tour in 1963 that she met her husband-to-be in Woodstock, NB. A year later she and Leroy Goodine were married and she moved with him to Fredericton. For many years Marlene (or Chicken, as her Island family nicknamed her) taught step dancing to children at local schools and in her home. Marlene enjoyed her summers at Lake George, playing cards and socializing with friends and family. Marlene is survived by her husband Leroy Goodine, and two sons, Troy (Sylvie) and Sandy (Stacy) and four grandchildren whom she adored, Ashley, Matthew, Shannon and Justin. Although there will be no visitation a Funeral Service will be held at the Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church on Wednesday, January 02, 2013 at 11 am with Father Aaron Knox officiating. Interment will take place in the Alexander Gibson Memorial Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Fredericton Food Bank.
