Obituary of Richard Snow

SNOW, DR. RICHARD “DICK” With sadness and appreciation for a life lived completely, the family of Dr. Dick Snow announces his passing on Sunday, September 30, 2018, peacefully in his sleep, with his family around him. Survived by his loving wife, Margaret, life partner and so much more for 64 years; children, Richard (Wendy) Snow, Brian Snow, Shari (Scott) Giffin, and Betsy (Kevin) Carson; grandchildren, Brea (Mark) Streeter, and Rane Giffin, and Chris and Cooper Carson; brother, Jeff (Carolyn) Snow; sister, Susan Salgado; sister-in-law, Linda Snow; several nieces and nephews, and a wonderful and supportive extended family. Predeceased by his brother, John Snow; brother-in-law, Dr. Isidro Salgado, and nephew Dr. David Salgado. Born on April 14, 1930, in Arvida, Quebec, to the late Dr. Vernon and Dorothy (Wall) Snow, he grew up in Hampton, NB, where he enjoyed spending the day at favorite fishing holes with his brother John, accompanying his father on house calls, and hot summer days at their family cottage on the Belleisle. Energetic and passionate for life, Dick loved his wife and children, loading up the family wagon for weekend trips to Bogle Lake, and special vacations to Expo 67, Disney World, and across Canada. “Guppy” adored his grandchildren, watching their games and celebrating their accomplishments. A dedicated family physician in the tradition of his father before him, Dr Dick spent long hours in his office, the hospitals and manors in Saint John NB, making countless house calls after hours; and never turned away a patient. He played, supported and followed sports all of his life: racquetball, handball, soccer, baseball, hockey, and more. In the summer, he could be found at a ball field watching or playing, and in the winter he was never far from a rink. A stalwart defenseman with a blistering slap shot, he played hockey with many teams over the years, including the UNB Varsity Reds, Fredericton Caps, and The Saint John Mooseheads Senior and Old-timers teams. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fly-fish for salmon on the Miramichi and the Restigouche, trout fish at Bogle Lake and other lakes and streams of New Brunswick, trek through the woods and marshes, hunting and appreciating the natural world around him. And he treasured spending summers with Margaret at their camp in Blackville. Dick and his family are so very grateful for all the support, prayers, cards, and visits that everyone has given us over the last month and a half. Special thanks to his physician team, Drs. Katelyn and Will Stymiest, Dr. Stevens, and Dr. Wood; the staff at Chalmers Hospital; family friend, Karen; and to the extraordinary, dedicated, and compassionate caregivers at Hospice House in Fredericton. There will be a celebration of his life on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 7 to 9:30 pm at Bill McGuire Centre, 95 James Renforth Drive, Rothesay, NB. Donations in memory of Dick may be made to his beloved UNB Varsity Reds Hockey Team, or to Hospice Fredericton, where he spent his final days in the warmth and care of the wonderful staff. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com We are comforted in knowing that he is at peace. Somewhere, our dad, our Guppy, is lacing up his skates, casting a fly across a still river, sitting down to a family meal with us all around him.
