Obituary of Brian Carty

Life Legacy It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Christopher Carty. Brian passed peacefully with his family by his side at the Moncton City hospital on September 26, 2017 following a car accident. He is survived by his beloved sons Alexander and Ian and their mother Eloise Wetmore, and his partner Anne Charlebois. Youngest son of June Carty and the late Gerald Carty, brother to John Carty (Alain Paulin) Fredericton, Wendy Carty (Dr. Bill Cook) Fredericton, and David Carty of Ottawa, Ontario. Brian was a devoted uncle to Elfed, Solomon, Jacob, Rebecca, Jessica, Rachel, Frank, Asha, Geoffrey, Dylan and great-uncle to Josef, Fabio, Lorenzo, Otis, Bianca and Leona. He will also be greatly missed by his many cousins. Brian was a bright light and deeply loved and cherished by his family. Born in Fredericton on January 25, 1963, Brian was captain of the basketball team and president of his graduating class at FHS in 1981. He graduated from St. Thomas University with his BSW, from Carleton University with his MSW and was a PhD candidate at UNB. Brian worked as a professional employment counsellor with the provincial and federal governments for many years, and was a passionate advocate for youth in transition. As a social worker, he also worked or volunteered with Canada World Youth, YM/YWCA and the Fredericton Community Living Society. Brian was a selfless mentor and community leader by example. He loved music and shared it at every opportunity. He was a passionate supporter of the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival where he could always be found front left stage with his iconic purple vest. Brian taught part-time at STU from 2003-2007 and became a full-time professor in the School of Social Work in 2008. Brian was a much loved teacher known for his warmth and enthusiasm and ability to create a safe, comfortable and engaging environment for students. In 2011 he was nominated for the STU Teaching Award. He was admired and much respected by his colleagues who appreciated his infectious positivity and sense of humour. At the time of his passing, Brian had completed and submitted his doctoral dissertation examining the work experiences of critical social workers and ways to address structural change and the needs of service users. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Dr. on Friday, September 29, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral will take place on Saturday, September 30 at 2 pm, in the Great Hall, second floor, George Martin Hall, St. Thomas University on Dineen Drive. A reception will follow on campus.
