Obituary of Mary Wortman
Fun loving, compassionate, loyal and humble, describe Mary Elizabeth (Douglass) Wortman, only child of Roy and Viola (Sansom) Douglass. She was born in the village of Stanley, NB on March 7, 1924. From growing up on a Fox Ranch, to Valedictorian for her High School class of six, to Secretarial training on to a 38 year career with the CNR in Moncton, Mary loved life to the fullest. After retirement in 1980, she remained connected to her bosses and co-workers while maintaining her many activities with her life-long friends. Her quick wit and snappy responses were legendary. She was passionate about her family, playing bridge, line dancing, decorating her home and clothes shopping. Mary loved a good glass of wine, remained an active member of St. Phillip’s Church and the Anglican Church Women, at age sixty years she achieved her goal of becoming bilingual. Travel was in Mary’s blood, trips taken with husband Doug to Western Canada, Europe and in the Maritimes Provinces.
Mary died in Fredericton, NB on Friday, September 18, 2015 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. She was predeceased (in 2004) by Doug Wortman, her husband of 53 years. She leaves her daughters, Elizabeth Wortman (partner Elaine), Jane Williamson and two grandchildren, Sarah and Thomas.
Visitation will be held for friends and family at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from 1-3 pm. Burial will take place in St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery, Stanley, NB at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
