My heartfelt condolences to Wendy, Elliott and family on the loss their dear George. I met George when he first arrived in Fredericton in the late '70s, and my first impressions are confirmed through the many tributes in this book of remembrance. His kind gentle nature was evident then, a young man with a bright future in front of him. At this time of sadness, we can celebrate a life well lived and memories that speak of his contribution to his family, friends, his work life and his community at large.

When we moved into our home (on Broad Street) in 1998, we were immediately and enthusiastically welcomed into the Fulton Heights community by George & Wendy. We can remember our first neighbourly conversation from "across the path" (the walking path that runs between our properties, and that links Broad Street to the Nashwaaksis Middle School grounds). Eager to help us get up and running as first-time homeowners, George made it abundantly clear that we were to borrow any tool or machinery in his fully equipped collection without hesitation... And so it was... George there set the gold standard of neighbourly life for us. Ever since that time of our first greetings, George and Wendy continued to be generously present to our growing family. Every Halloween, Laura, Anna, Amanda, and Will were so excited for the personalized treat bags George would deliver straight to our door. The kids couldn't then wait to make the Bergeron Home their first stop on their Trick-or-Treat journey to show-off their costumes. Our traditional Horsley-Bergeron Christmas gift exchange was no less anticipated every year. George's arrival with that tin of Quality Street Chocolates has annually marked our family's first joys of the Season for as long as we can remember. The "across the path" conversations were plentiful over the years, enabling us to share in the most significant of life's events, and to nurture the deep roots of our friendship. There are many encounters with George we will all continue to treasure in our hearts. We certainly couldn't have asked for a more caring, generous, and respectable soul to have been planted beside for all these years. We hold you fondly in our memories and in our prayers, George, and also your (and our) beloved Wendy, Elliott and family. Know that we are always here to support Wendy with anything that is needed. We will miss you dearly. Love, Tracy (aka "Stacey") Steve (#1), Laura, Anna, Amanda & Will XO

Q: How would you describe George to someone who had never met them?
A: I grew up playing hockey with Elliott and have many fond memories of seeing George on frosty weekend mornings at the rink, like the early mornings at the York arena when it was so cold my skate laces were frozen solid and there was a thick fog on the ice. George had great patience, I never once saw him lose his temper, never saw him yell at a referee, he was always fun and encouraging. As fun as he was as one of the parents on the hockey team, he was an even better chef. He loved cooking and prepared intricate meals. I always felt guilty because one Christmas he made me Szechuan dumplings because he knew I loved them, and sent me home with a big bag of dumplings. They're a fairly difficult thing to make homemade and they were incredible. That night I had too much to drink and slipped and fell on the ice on the way home. The next day I couldn't find the dumplings and figured I lost them in the snow when I fell. I told George about it later on and I'll never forget the look of dismay on his face, although George had a great sense of humour and I'm sure he found a way to laugh at it. Well, much later on - like years later - I found those dumplings. I had put them in the freezer at home and they fell down in the back. They were frozen as solid as a brick. I'll never forget that. So if I would describe George to someone who had never met him, I'd say he was like a second family to me, very kind and generous, funny, patient, lover of literature, and could made a Szechuan dumpling so delicious it would blow your hair back! If you're watching this George I hope you're proud of the person I became. What a long strange trip it's been.

I remember George as a great father, loving husband and good friend! George was an excellent photographer and editor and took great pride in his work. George loved to cook, and to barbecue. His cooking skills were top notch, and I still remember waiting for and savouring his home cooked meals. George loved his Weber barbecue, and spent a lot of time perfecting his barbecue technique. George will be missed by Glenn, Scott, Tim and Colin, in Ontario.
