George was one of the group of established scientists when I joined Agriculture Canada in 1968. He was well respected and was fortunate to be able to have a large impact for the good on the crop, blueberries, that he spent most of his time on. Always fun to be with, he often provided entertainment at staff parties. My sincerest condolences to his family

My home away from home my haven while in Nurses
Training. I think, I became part of the family when Bruce,Gary and Laurie started calling me "Old Crotchety " what great laughs we had. I always thought it was great that friends would often stop at their door just to tell Pat a joke!
Our close connection had a lot to do with my starting
to date Gene whom Pat thought was very special.
At our wedding, George gave the "Toast to the Bride" and told everyone how Pat and I schemed to help Gene see the Light!
Over the years, we always kept in touch all across Canada. Visits when we were near. One day we never stopped talking about was the day we were visiting in N.B. Ronda had been Baptized and after we were
home for awhile we realized our toddler Blair was missing. All the community came to help, FireFighters,
Police and RCMP and after many hours he was found safe and sound! What a relief!!
George was wise, loving, caring, intelligent and adventurous man who we loved very much....
We have been grateful and honoured to have had the pleasure of having" Pat and George" in our lives.
Love and condolences to Bruce, Gary, Laurie and their families.

You were Uncle George to me. Godfather was you official title but that was a hard title for a young girl to get her head around. We lived in different sides of the country but I always felt you were close. You will be missed but Aunt Pat will be happy to see you. Love always Ronda

George ( and Pat ) in effect became my Canadian parents starting in September 1969, when I arrived in Fredericton and was met by them as part of a welcoming programme from a local service club. Also on the plane were Rob Chapman and Ian Naish, all of us signed up to do graduate work – Rob in Geology, and Ian and I in Engineering.
Not only were we given the grand tour of Fredericton ( and Nashwaaksis, because it should never be referred to as Fredericton North )but we were invited for supper as well.
For myself, and later for Lynne, these suppers became a regular thing, with George and Pat always interested in what we were doing, and later on, in what our families were doing. We remember, in particular, New Years Day football games, during which I don’t think we moved much during 4 or 5 games. Pat kept us supplied with food and munchies, and George provided the technical commentary for two people who knew nothing about the game. We were made a part of the family, and when Mum, Dad and my sister Sheila came over for our wedding, they very generously hosted them and showed them around. They were so much part of our family that, when our first daughter was born at VPH, they actually saw her before Lynne’s mum and dad, since they were closer!
George was always a quiet but strong personality, happy to give advice when asked– from daisy species to baseball rules. I admired him immensely – I was just starting out on my PhD, and here was a guy who was doing ( and completed ) his PhD while holding down a full time job at the Research station, raising a family and also able to find time for people like us and his many church related activities. And I thought full time study was hard enough!
He never could quite understand why I did not like blueberries, and if he failed in anything it was to convert me to loving what was the love of his professional life. Whether it be as a federal civil servant, as an employee of WBANA, or even using Pat’s subtle methods of wafting home-made blueberry muffins in front of my nose, I am sorry to report that he was unsuccessful. Lynne, by the way, will only eat WILD blueberries!
Somewhere up there , the world expert on the sex life of the blueberry beetle is just shaking his head.
George – I will miss you, but I am sure that you and Pat are still looking after me.
Thanks..David ( and Lynne )

Condolences to everyone, myself included, as George will be missed by all that had the pleasure to spend any time at all with him. George is/was a neighbour, part of the respected old guard in our community. He and his wife Pat are forever etched into my memories. Most nostalgic are the images of them working away in their beautiful gardens and recently of George and his routine walking around the court. His smile and his calm knowing demeanor always warmed my heart. He was and shall always remain a very good man.

Bruce, Gary, Laurie and families.
Sincere condolences on your great loss. George was a kind and gentle man. He and Pat were the best neighbours of mine for over 30 years. I loved wandering through his gardens and he would tell me the names of each flower. Pat would tell me his garden was spreading onto my property and I would tell her is was ok as I am not a gardener sadly. I will cherish many fond memories of George and Pat as friends and neighbours.

We were sorry to hear of George's passing. He was a knowledgeable man with many interests and was a good work colleague and friend.
George and I first met about 50 years ago at the Agriculture Canada Research Station where we both worked. We worked together on numerous fruit crop projects particularly on the improvement of the developing lowbush blueberry industry in the Maritimes. Our collaboration and friendship continued after George's retirement and while he was Executive Director of the Wild Blueberry Association of North America. Following my retirement we continued to associate with he and Pat during many winters in Myrtle Beach, SC as part of the 'Canadian Gang'. The condo where we stayed was like a college dorm. We played golf together many a time and often George and I would be looking at plants, insects and birds on the course while other golfers waited for us to play.
After we all stopped going to Myrtle Beach for the winter, we continued to associate and talked about world affairs, scientific discoveries, garden plants and American politics.
George will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him and his family can be assured that he left this world a much better place for his presence.

To George and Pats beautiful family please accept our sincere condolences. We met your parents in Myrtle Beach when we visited Chuck and Betty Freeburg(mom and dad) They were such beautiful fun kind people. Your dad and I would keep in touch and I looked forward to his letters arriving. Mario and George would talk about gardening and Mario introduced George to the Prickly pear one year while in Myrtle Beach. May your many beautiful memories help you all through this time.

My condolences to Bruce, Gary and Laurie and your families. George, a kind, funny, beautiful person! I had the pleasure of working for George for 2 years… I wouldn’t call it work…it was more like visiting a friend. Loved all his stories! Such an interesting life he had. Once in a while I’d bring my granddaughter when dropping off groceries…she’d always greet him with “how are you doing today Mr. George, we brought you some fruits and vegetables and when you run out we’ll get you more”. He’d always enjoy to see her. I will miss spending time with him. He will always have a special place in my heart.

George and Pat were like second parents to me. Whether joining Bruce, my father and me for a round of golf in the snow or dispensing hot chocolate and wisdom at the Y's Men's canteen at the Nashwaaksis Arena, George was one of my very favorite people. His wit and wisdom was always encouraging and never condescending or judgmental. I consider myself so very lucky to have grown up in a Nashwaaksis that included fabulous male role models such as George Wood, Lyle Smith, Don Hallett and Frank MacLoon, among many others. Deepest sympathies to Bruce, Gary, Laurie and their families.
