I found out almost instantly, what a kind, friendly and welcoming person Lou was. A better neighbor never existed.
My wife and I bought and moved into the house next door to Lou and Ingrid, in February 1987. Over the years, Lou and I would spend many times chatting when we were outside. Instead of tending to chores like mowing the lawn, raking leaves or shoveling snow, we would always take a break to chat. It was a priority with Lou to just catch up on things. The stories he would tell bring a smile to my face, even now. It never failed, Lou would always call me before Rogers, when his TV or cable acted up. I often said that I could plan my day at home around what Lou was doing outside. He was always out there looking after things or getting ready for a storm.
Many times, on a beautiful summer afternoon or evening, I would look over and see Lou enjoying a relaxing day on his deck, with music playing or talking to the kids on the phone. He was proud of the pigeon he tamed from the time it was a baby. It would come to him while he was on the deck and sit while they watched the other birds splashing in the bird bath. Lou just loved being outdoors. I often think of him when I take a glance across the back yard, thinking back to those days.
My heartfelt condolences to Ingrid, the kids and family at this time of sorrow. Lou will forever be a valued friend and neighbor and dearly missed.
