Obituary of Marjorie Ruth Ivy Knight

Our loving mother, Marjorie Ruth Ivy Knight of Fredericton, NB wife of the late Daina Knight, began a new journey with her heavenly father on November 18, 2022. Marjorie was born in Saint John, New Brunswick on December 3, 1933, under the tutorship of her late wonderful, humble, and caring parents, Violet (Dolly) Nelson (Nel) MacArthur.  

Marjorie was the loving mother to Cheryl (Charlie Miles), Gary (Anne), Mark (Louise Smyth Kaiser) and Andrew. Her grandchildren Michael, Jonathan and Luke Miles, Jennifer Phillips, Kevin, Josh, Ryan, and Cole Knight as well as her seven great-grandchildren lit up her life. She was a loving sister to Carman MacArthur (Judy), Betty Wright (Eddie, deceased), Sandra Howe, and Patricia Pineo. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins along with Daina’s siblings, Dorothy Ferguson, Meredith MacCallum, and Edward Knight. Her extended family included many former UNB and STU international students, their children, and grandchildren.  

Marjorie grew up in West Saint John where she met Daina through her friendship with his younger sisters. Following their marriage in 1953, they moved to Fredericton in 1954.  Marjorie was a faithful servant of the Lord in her church and community. Over the years, she was a member of Union Street Baptist Church, Grace Memorial Church and lastly, The Drive, where she served in many capacities such as a Sunday School and Mission Band teacher, youth group leader, Executive member of the Atlantic Baptist Women’s Guild Executive, Christian Action Federation board member, and was instrumental in developing an International Student program among local churches.  

Marjorie was a life-long learner. At the age of 41, she went to UNB and proudly graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1981. She taught Kindergarten in Keswick Ridge community and was active in the Kindergarten Association that successfully lobbied the NB government to include Kindergarten in the public school system. After retirement, she learned to quilt and became a member of the Brunswick Street Baptist Church quilting group where she enjoyed their fellowship and friendship. She also took up painting and created many works of art.  

Marjorie shared her love for family and friends by welcoming them into her home and cottage for meals, stories, and laughter. She touched many lives in Fredericton, Saint John and around the globe.  She will be missed but lives on in the hearts of all who loved and knew her. Well done, thy good and faithful servant! 

The family wishes to say thank you to the EMTs, nurses and doctors in the ER and 4SE at the DECH as well as the 4BS ICU at the Saint John Regional. Their care and compassion went above and beyond. Special gratitude to Dr. Barton, Dr. Englehart, Dr. Kenney, Dr. Rushton, Dr. Kolyvas, and Dr. Love. 

Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Dr., Fredericton on Thursday, November 24, 2022, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The Celebration of Life will take place at York Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, November 25, 2022, at 11:00 am with Rev. Gordon Cook officiating. A private family internment will take place at Sunny Bank Cemetery, Fredericton, NB.  For those who wish, donations be made to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Foundation, Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, The Christian Action Federation of New Brunswick, Acadia Divinity College, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
