Dear Wilma, Yolanda, Emily and family we’ll send our warmest condolences at the passing of our beloved “Oom Auke”. We remember him as a very warm open friendly welcoming funny and helpful Uncle. My first memories of Vaughn go back to a time that “Oom Auke and tante Truus” came visiting the Netherlands and he was filming their visit, I didn’t know somebody with a film camera these days and maybe he inspired me to start filming myself later in life. In 1984 I visited Canada together with my brother Pieter. This was a great adventure for the both of us. Our mother Vaughn’s late sister Atje was a little afraid that we might decide to emigrate following Vaughn’s example. We didn’t but we had a lovely time in New Brunswick and later in Ontario. Vaughn and Trudy came to pick us up from the airport all the way in Halifax. On our way to Fredericton we visited the Magnetic hill where the water seems to run up the hill. I remember it was raining hard and the car was slightly aqua plaining in the hills. Vaughn helped us to make a (fake) ID card with his printing skills. This card made it possible to drink a bear in the pub because I was only 18 at that time. We went looking together for a cheap car with which we could travel to Toronto but when we found something in the right price class only one wheel would break so we left this idea and choose to rent a car locally and take the night train to Toronto later. We stayed with Vaugh and Trudy and were treated on a barbeque that he cooked at the veranda and was eaten in the house that was different from a barbeque in Holland where you would have dinner outside. We were invited to have dinner at the golf club which was new to us as well. We did visit Mactaquac which I remember till today means in native language “where waters meet”. He drove us to the US border to make our first steps in the USA by passing a wooden bridge. All together we had a trip that we’ll never forget. Much later when Jeanet and I were married and had moved to Rhenen Vaughn and Trudy came visiting us on a surprise visit which we very much appreciated.

To my dear friend Wilma and her daughters Yolanda and Emily, I am saddened by the news of Vaughn's passing. However, because Vaughn loved the Lord, he is now in heaven and he is at perfect peace. I will see you on Wednesday. Let me know if I can help by dropping off a meal or coffee goodies either now or down the road. I love you all and wish you strength in the difficult days ahead.
