Obituary of Isabel Ruth Hildebrand

Please share a memory of Isabel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Isabel Ruth (Ewing) Hildebrand passed away peacefully on August 27, 2022, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, NB. She was born September 19, 1928, in Brooklyn, Hants County, NS, the daughter of the late Rev. Merton R. and Lulu (Shipley) Ewing. Isabel is survived by her children Linda (Jeffrey) Deloughery of Moncton, NB, John (Sherrill Mullen) of Fredericton, NB, Alan of Calgary, AB, Katherine (Patrick Laforest) of Birdton, NB and Barbara (Roland Cusack) of Halifax, NS; grandchildren John Andrew Hildebrand, Taylor Hildebrand, and Benjamin Cusack; sister-in-law, Irene Hildebrand; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. John F.T. Hildebrand; her brother, Russell Ewing and sister-in-law, Eileen; sisters-in-law, Ethel (Wesley) Davidson and Eliza (Stuart) Seymour, and brother-in-law, Douglas Hildebrand.

Isabel was a graduate of Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, with studies in voice. She was an impressive soprano soloist and a choir member with various churches for more than 70 years. A pianist throughout her life, Isabel still enjoyed playing regularly. She was a charter member of the United Church Women at Nashwaaksis United Church and a lifelong “camper” at the annual Berwick United Church camp meetings in the Annapolis Valley. She was also a Past President of the Epsilon Y’s Menettes. Isabel enjoyed sewing, knitting, and quilting. Her family treasures everything produced by these talents including the special quilts made for them.

During her life, Isabel lived in several communities in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Her family appreciated that she was a stay-at-home Mom, but she also enjoyed short jaunts to various parts of Canada with her husband, John. In later years, she enjoyed many winters with friends and family in Pompano Beach, Florida, and special visits to Arizona and Mexico. For nearly 60 years, the summers have centered around the family cottage at Miramichi Lake and the cottage community there. Although a fine bridge player, Mom was never happier than when someone else could be the fourth at the bridge table!

Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, from 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at Nashwaaksis United Church on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022 at 2 pm with Rev. Brian Delong officiating. Interment to follow in Douglas Rural Cemetery. The family requests that masks be worn, and social distancing observed at both the visitation and funeral service. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
