Obituary of George Thomas Porter

PORTER, GEORGE THOMAS

 The passing of George Thomas Porter of Fredericton, NB, husband of the late Marion “Faith” (Reader) Porter occurred on Monday, July 25, 2022 at Hospice House, Fredericton, NB after a brief illness. Born on March 7, 1942 in Wolfville, NS, he was the son of the late George and Jean (Schriver) Porter.

George leaves behind a loving family and numerous friends who will miss him dearly. He will always be loved and remembered by his children, Kevin Porter (Krista) and Karen Gunn (David); grandchildren, Tyler Gunn (Jordan), Rebecca Porter (Aaron Hunter) and Lucas Porter; sister, Alma Jean Wright (Lewis); brother, David Porter (Cathy); several nieces and nephews and his special friend, Maxine Spencer. In addition to his parents and wife, George was predeceased by his grandson, Joshua Gunn.

George was a 52 year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and retired in 2005 as an electrician. He was known as a handyman who could build and fix anything and would help anyone out whenever he was asked. He was a member of Greenwood Drive Baptist Church where he volunteered at the clothing bank as well as the York Care Centre. George was a great outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and shared this passion with his children and grandchildren. He loved playing golf with his friends and family and spent many hours in the rink cheering on his favorite hockey players throughout his lifetime.

Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton (access York Funeral Home via Douglas Avenue) on Friday, July 29, 2022 from 6-9 pm. The Funeral Service will take place at The Drive Baptist Church, 150 Greenwood Drive, Fredericton, NB on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 2 pm with Rev. Gordon Cook officiating. Honourary Pallbearers for the service will be Lewis Wright, Lester Foreman, Jack Clowater, Reg Henry and Ron Henry; Pallbearers will be Kevin Porter, Lucas Porter, David Gunn, Tyler Gunn, Bud Thompson and David Porter.  Interment will take place in Meductic Baptist Cemetery, Meductic, NB, at 5 pm on Saturday, July 30.

In lieu of flowers - due to allergies, the family would appreciate donations be made to Hospice Fredericton (Palliative Care Resource Network Inc.), Joshua Porter Gunn Bursary Fund at SJ Community Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
