Obituary of Evelyn Olive Elizabeth Mockler

Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

The family of Evelyn Olive Elizabeth Mockler of Fredericton, NB, wish to announce her peaceful passing on April 18, 2022.  Born on June 17, 1939 in Edmundston, NB, she was the daughter of the late Annie June (Cooper) and Roland Scott McKinley.

Ev was the loving wife of Alvin Joseph “Doug” Mockler. They spent 65 years together on this earth making wonderful memories. When asked to provide some tips to a long and successful marriage at one of their anniversary celebrations, Ev said to “always do the dishes together at the end of each day.”

She became a mother at a young age and devoted her entire life to her family. She loved being a grandmother and enjoyed making her grandchildren laugh – which she did often. She adored her family and was a fierce defender of them, especially her grandchildren. She instilled a strong sense of family in us and was always generous with her time and love.

She loved having her family together under one roof sharing a meal and some stories. She was a great cook and her apple pies were arguably among the finest ever made. At family gatherings, she would offer her refreshing brand of direct commentary on any of the various subjects being discussed or share her opinions in the form of a witty aside. She was a firecracker and everyone that knew her well enjoyed her company.

In her retirement, she enjoyed visits with family, looked forward to her noon hour swims with the girls, going for evening walks with her husband, travelling to see her family in Ontario, being at a baseball field, a swimming pool or in a rink to watch her grandchildren participate in their sporting events, gardening, watching TV movies, drinking weak tea and smoking strong cigarettes, crocheting blankets and dish cloths for her grandchildren, and spending time chatting with her family and friends.

Her last years were not easy. She had multiple on-going health-related issues, and yet through it all, she exhibited incredible strength, courage, and determination. Our hearts are made lighter knowing she has now found peace.

The unconditional love and support she provided to the people she knew and loved, her independent spirit, and her courage are all part of the legacy she leaves behind. She lived a full life and was not afraid to leave this world which is the sign of a life well lived. We are blessed to have had her as our role model.

In addition to her husband, Evelyn will be deeply missed by daughter Phyllis Mockler-Caissie, son-in-law Ernie Caissie, grandson Jon Lister (Becky Elgee), great-granddaughter Mary Ann Condo; grandson Chris Lister (Debbie Lister ), great-granddaughters Abigail and Sophie Lister; daughter Janet Young, son-in-law Greg Young, granddaughter Ashley Young (Scott Kimball), great-grandchildren Kennedy, Nathan and Oliver Kimball, grandson Robert Young, grandson Jeff Young (Jillian Sutthery), great-grandson Noah Young, grandson Bradley Young; and by her son Douglas Mockler, daughter-in-law Robin Mockler, grandson Jordan Mockler (Brianna Pooler) and great-granddaughter Madelyn. Ev will also be fondly remembered by her step-grandchildren and their families, Jason Hayden, Sheena Caissie and Stacie Breen. As well, she leaves behind a sister, Carolyn Savage, brothers Jack McKinley and Scott McKinley as well as several sister and brother in-laws and nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Peter Dickinson and his staff for the care and kindness always given to Evelyn; the medical team with the Extra Mural Program; the pharmacy team at Lawton’s Brookside; Dr. Gordon MacDonald for his compassion and the nurses at Hospice House who made mom’s final hours so comfortable. Over the last several weeks Jasmine Saunders provided Ev with excellent personal home support and companionship. As well, thanks are extended to the family, friends and neighbours who offered support to mom with a phone call or visit.

A Private Family Memorial Service will take place at York Funeral Home in the T.
