“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” We were so sorry to hear of Herbs passing. Knowing him over the years, he was always ready with a joke to make you laugh and brighten your day. But he could also be very deep, especially about things of the Lord. We often had these deep discussions. Herb loved people, and ministering to people. And even though he was family, he ministered to me personally in so many ways. I'm glad I was able to tell him that the last time I saw him. Herb was a person you could sit and talk with and it seemed as if he knew you all his life. Faithful to his calling as a Salvation Army Captain, giving and caring he certainly was. I know he will be deeply missed and his loss will be felt especially with Alice, his wife. If there ever was a true and lasting love it was Herb and Alice's. Through many health issues they supported and cared for each other, faithfully. To know Herb was to love him. I'm so glad to have spent the time I did with him. Alice and family remain in our prayers and in our thoughts. Heaven has gained another soldier.

Captain Alice, Sherry, and Family,
My deepest condolences to you and your family as you gather to mourn the loss of Captain Herb. Personally, as I reflect on my interactions with him, I cannot help but reflect on his impact on my spiritual life and development. Herb provided a strong example of what it means to serve the Lord in all aspects of life. A friend and a mentor, Captain Herb, will always be remembered as a hero of my faith as I know he was too many other people. Some words from the gospel of John:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Herb believed this and encouraged others to believe in this as well. We can be encouraged, that now he is in the arms of his loving saviour, whom he served. As you gather together to celebrate Herb's life, please know that our hearts are with you and we will be holding you all in our prayers. Well done, good and faithful servant!

Herb was a welcome inspiration everywhere he went, always lifting spirits first with his goofy, Newfie wit, followed by the bigger impact of his passion to serve Christ. He was always tender in his approach, and always tenacious in matters of serving the Lord.
Herb made it a point to come to The Family Services office during my time as director, to minister sincere compassion to me. He knew from experience, the array of emergencies and emotions wrapped up in the clients who came through the doors at The Salvation Army Family Services. It was his prayers among those of many others, that made continual miracles happen through that office! Many lives are richer and sweeter because of this dear man. My life surely was and still is. I can’t imagine anyone not loving him.
To Alice, and all family members, I pray that your grief will be lightened by the gratefulness in your hearts, to have lived with and loved this saint of God.
