My sincere condolences to Joe's family. I just happened upon this sad news as I randomly searched for Joe Blades on Facebook. I had a brief friendship with him at Abenaki Canoe Club in Dartmouth; we used to canoe around the lake together. He was my elder by a couple of years. I also knew Ruth and Carol by association. From reading about Joe, it's clear he was an active writer who loved working with children, and he was passionate about publishing and encouraging personal expression. As an English teacher, I can certainly appreciate that and it's clear he had an impact on many people. Again, my sympathies.

I met Joe at the League of Canadian Poets. He was then Maritime Representative on National Council. A group of us did a cross-Canada poetry tour with the CBC. Joe loved the written and spoken word. He was passionate about writing and upholding human rights. Joe emerged as a leader in life and literature. He was my publisher and friend. On one occasion, we quarreled and I cannot remember now why that was. What does matter is that he changed other people's lives for the better while he was among us. Now his life's work will endure and generations will continue to appreciate his talent. How he shared his genius with those of us who could only look on in awe.

I am more grateful to Joe Blades than any brief comment can express. I will write a real memorial for him in due time, at greater length. Joe undertook to publish my first book, Song of the Vulgar Starling, back in 1999 when I had the great happiness to live in Fredericton. His company still glows in my memory so strongly that, to my feeling, it is not suspended by the sadness I must resign myself to experiencing now. We walked all over Fredericton, down by the river, and we visited his office, and we talked and talked. Everyone close to him, please accept my condolences. What a rare embodiment of generosity.

I am so very sorry to hear about Joe's death. He was an incredibly kind, savvy and accomplished man. He published my wee volume of poetry back in the 90s. I couldn't have asked for a better publisher. His editorial eye was excellent and he saw me through the entire process with such generosity, wit and responsiveness.
His loss is an enormous one for Canada's literary world. My warmest condolences to his family. He left an indelible mark on my life and, I'm sure, many others. He will certainly not be forgotten.

I am deeply shocked by this news. Joe was one of a kind. His dedication to conservation and activism in so many areas came to life in his poetic imagery and made the rest of us sit up and listen. He was a generous kind soul who treated everyone as a friend. I will always remember those crazy notebooks he carried, filled with everything from matchbook covers to coasters to business cards, string, feathers, and anything else that inspired him. He was a treasured friend who will be dearly missed. Be at peace, my friend.
My heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends. We will hold him in our hearts.

Joe Blades was a phenomenally creative man, whether in poems, drawings, journals, or the "little somethings" he would mail out. He was also one of the most important avant-garde poets and publishers in Canada, bringing out his own innovative writing and that of other poets, along with work by immigrants from many countries with Broken Jaw Press, and broadcasting the latest in Spoken Word poetry on the UNB radio. He loved art, words, people and activism. What a unique and vibrant person he was!
