Obituary of Shirley Farrell

It is with great sadness that her family announces the death of Shirley Louise Farrell on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on July 9, 1934, she was the daughter of the Caroline (Carrie) Farrell and the late Ronald Farrell. Besides her father, she was predeceased by her sister, Elaine Doak; brothers, Charles, Clinton and George. In addition to her mother, Caroline Farrell of York Manor, she is survived by her sisters, Doris (Paul) Lapointe of Kitchener and Margaret (Jacques) Beniot of Montreal; her brother, Donald (Angela) of Toronto; brother-in-law, Merlin Doak of Fredericton; sisters-in-law, Shirley Farrell of Fredericton and Gladys Farrell of Brantford; she will be missed by her seven nieces and nephews and her eight grand nieces and grand nephews, she was their treasured “Tante Shirley”.
Shirley attended school in Marysville and Fredericton. In 1954, she began nurse’s training in VPH and received the first Georgia Pond Memorial Bursary. She graduated in 1957. She worked in hospitals in Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton where she served as a 2nd lieutenant in an army reserve unit. For many years she was a member of the Marysville Legion. After returning to Fredericton, she worked in Emergency Rooms at VPH and DECRH before retiring. She served as Chairperson of the Diabetic Committee at VPH and DECRH and with the New Brunswick Association of Registered Nurses on the Executive Council and Nursing Committees. In 2007, she received a Life Membership in recognition of her dedication and commitment to the NB Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada, of which she served on the Board of Directors and as chairperson for several years.
There will be no visitation by her request. A Memorial Service will take place at Marysville United Church on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 2 pm with Rev. David Brewer officiating. Interment will take place in Alexander Gibson Memorial Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Osteoporosis Canada, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
