Obituary of Arie Pelkman

Arie Cornelis Pelkman of Fredericton, NB, husband of Neeltje (Buitendijk) Pelkman passed away peacefully on Friday evening, May 6, 2011 at the York Manor Nursing Home at the age of 92. Born on May 7, 1919 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, he was the son of the late Cornelis and Catharina (van den Ban) Pelkman. He was a founding member of the Christian Reformed Church. Arie was an active member serving on the Church Council for several years and also served as clerk and treasurer for many years. Arie worked for a shipping company in the Netherlands prior to immigrating to Canada in 1956, he then worked as an office manager for Acadia Marble for 24 years. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. In addition to his wife, Arie is survived by eight children, Catharina (Gary) Lenehan of Bedell, NB, Bill Pelkman of Calgary, AB, Maureen (Gerry) Blom of Fredericton, NB, Helena Sutherland of Kitchener, ON, Margaret (Eddison) Moore of Fredericton, NB, Alice Pelkman (Klaas Borst) of Peterborough, ON, Christine Pelkman (Aubrey Fowler) of Haddonfield, NJ, James (Angela) of Kitchener, ON; 18 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; brothers, Peter (Bonnie) Pelkman of Parkville, BC and Cornelis Pelkman of Auckland, NZ; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Mark Blom of Fredericton; sister, Maartje Pelkman; brothers, Marinus and Willem Pelkman of Rotterdam and sister-in-law, Molly Pelkman of Auckland, NZ. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at the Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 2 pm with Rev. Harold Winter officiating. Interment will take place in Douglas Rural Cemetery with a reception to follow in the church basement. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Christian Reformed Church, Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
