Obituary of Claude Kierstead

Claude Eugene Kierstead of Fredericton, NB, passed into the presence of his Lord and Master, peacefully, with his wife Winnie, at his side on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on September 8, 1922 in Saint John, NB, he was the son of the late James and Amy (Belton) Kierstead. He grew up in Upper Kent, NB. He served as Cub Master, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Men’s Presbytery of the Wilmot Church, Bible Study Teacher, a member of the Full Gospel Men’s Fellowship and the Christian Alliance Church for 25 years. Claude began school in Fort Fairfield, ME and in his early years moved to Upper Kent, NB; there he met and married Glenna (Canam) and had three children. He served in the R.C.A.F. from 1943-1945, serving overseas mainly in South Africa with a unit attached to the British Air Force – Bomber Command as a Radar Mechanic. On his return to Canada, he along with many other veterans entered Alexander College, formed primarily for returning veterans. He graduated from UNB as an Electrical Engineer and was employed with NBEPC for 34 years plus from 1949-1983. Claude married G. “Winnie” (Lloyd) in 1967 after both of them lost their mates the previous year. In addition to his wife of 43 years, Claude is survived by his sons, Michael Kierstead (Kim) and David Kierstead (Debra) all of Fredericton, NB; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; step-daughters, Dawn Sharpe (Alex) of Fredericton, NB and Anne Simons (Gordon) of Fredericton, NB; step-sons, John Bishop (Colleen) of Chilliwack, BC and Garry Bishop (Sharon) of London, ON; several step grandchildren; one step great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Glenna (Canam) Kierstead; daughter, Joanne Nason and infant sister, Violet. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 2 pm with Rev. Duane Collicott officiating and Rev. Jim Lewis assisting. Pallbearers for the service will be Allan and Gary Hatfield, Jim Hiscock, Wayne Scott, Kendall and Glen Canam; Honourary Pallbearers will be Clair Mullen, Alex Sharpe, Keith McMullin, Doug Ashfield and Luke Kelly. Interment will take place in Fredericton Rural Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Chalmers Foundation or the charity of the donor’s choice.
