Obituary of Vernon Sweeney

The passing of Vernon Martin Sweeney of Durham Bridge, NB, husband of Sherry (Gilliss) Sweeney, occurred on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on October 4, 1943 in Croydon, Surrey, England, he was the son of the late Robert D. and Amelia Janet (Dale) Sweeney. Vernon moved to Canada in 1946, he then was a carpenter’s helper, woodsman and then worked at a shoe factory in Hamilton, ON; and retired in 1995 from New Brunswick Tourism and Transportation. He was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Beaverbrook Branch #80 and a member of the Fredericton Deaf Dart Club. He enjoyed watching sports on TV and was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays; he also enjoyed darts and bowling. Vernon loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and fishing, he liked taking pictures, watching movies and loved chatting with friends and family. In addition to his wife of 32 years, Vernon is survived by his sister, Barbara (Maurice) Munn and their children, Belinda (Carman) Sangster and B. J. MacLean; brother, Tom (Debbie) Sweeney and their children, Sara, Emily and Molly; nephews, Bradley Gilliss (Lindsay Jardine) and Dean (Jennie) Gilliss; nieces, Ashley Taylor and Ruth Ann Gilliss; great nephews, Brett Miller, Colton Sangster ad Ryan Gilliss; aunts, uncles and cousins and our cat, Coco. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #80 are asked to assemble for a Legion Tribute Service at 7 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 1 pm with Canon John Cathcart officiating. Interment will take place in Upper Durham Memorial Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association; New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of the donor’s choice.
