Obituary of Douglas Porter

The passing of Douglas “Doug” Edgar Porter, husband of Frances (MacLean) Porter of Stanley, NB, occurred on Sunday, January 09, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton. Born on September 18, 1926 in Maple Grove, NB, Doug was a son of the late Wallace and Margaret (Thomas) Porter. Doug worked for Diamond Construction starting in 1952. He was a grader operator which earned him the nickname “Bumpy”. Doug was a member of Hillcrest United Church and was active with the cemetery committee. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #51, enjoyed curling, golfing, 4 wheeling on the woodlot, trips to Camp Alpine and was a walking participant in the “Terry Fox Run” for 30 years. In addition to his wife, Doug is survived by his five children, Diane (Irvine) Humble, Cathy (Derwin) Fullarton, Donna (Duane) Munn, Alan Porter, Judy (Mike) Allport; chosen family, Betty Lou (Ted) Ross, Raymond (Fredricka) Porter and Frank (Shirley) Porter; eight grandchildren, Shelley, Sandy, Cheryl, Corey, Nevin, Julie, Josh and Allyson; seven great grandchildren, Kelsey, Chloe, Tyson, Owen, Hayden, Jordan and Trysten; several nieces and nephews; dog, predeceased by Tippy and survived by new family puppy, Abby. Doug was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by eight siblings, Bedford, Ina, Frank, Maudie, Doris, Reta, Ida and Charlie. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Landmark Lodge #51 will provide a Masonic Tribute Service at 7 pm. A Funeral Service will take place from Hillcrest United Church on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 2 pm with Wally Ellis, DLM officiating and Rev. Murray McFarlane assising. Interment will be in Hillcrest United Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Hillcrest United Church, Cemetery Fund or the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation.
