Obituary of Rolfe MacLaggan

Rolfe Edwin MacLaggan of Fredericton, NB, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Veterans Health Unit. Born on August 29, 1924 in Nashwaak Bridge, NB, he was the son of the late James and Annie (MacDonald) MacLaggan. Rolfe was a Veteran of WWII. He served for the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Canada and overseas at a base hospital in England. Following the war, he lived in Guelph, ON and worked for the Guelph Daily Mercury from 1950 until he retired in 1985. He then returned to Nashwaak Bridge. He was very involved with the community and an active member of St. Luke’s United Church, serving on the church council, presbytery, and as a Youth Group Leader. He volunteered on the Bicentennial committee, for local seniors groups and Meals on Wheels. Rolfe enjoyed fishing, cross country skiing, tubing, swimming, music and reading. Rolfe is survived by his special friend and companion, Alice MacFarlane (Stairs) of Fredericton, NB; two sons, David (Diane) of North Vancouver BC, Robert (Christa) of Sarnia, ON; and three grandchildren, Tristan (Leigh) of Vancouver, BC, Alison (Brian) of Victoria, BC and Kate (Steve) of Waterloo, ON; sisters-in-law, Nina MacLaggan of Stanley, NB and Eileen Walters (Doug) of Pictou, NS; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife, Jean (Wallace) MacLaggan, he was predeceased by his daughter, Anne; brothers, Fred, Bill, Lloyd and Mac; sisters, Ruby Fullarton, Gracie Manzer and Gertrude MacDonald; step brothers, George and Carl. The MacLaggan family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Alice and her family for embracing Father into their lives and for the continuous love and care they provided to him. They would also like to thank all the staff of the DVA for their wonderful care of Father over the past several years. A Memorial Service will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 2 pm with Rev. Gil MacKenzie officiating; with a reception to follow in the Fireside Room. Interment will take place at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Guelph, ON at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #80, Nashwaak Bridge, the Veterans Health Unit, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
