Obituary of Ivan Pond

With hearts filled with admiration for the courageous battle fought and heavy with sadness for the battle lost, the family of Ivan Pond of Taxis River announce his passing at the DECH on April 9, 2009. Beloved husband of Roxanne (Calhoun) and devoted father to Julie McKay (Robin) of Taxis River; Aaron Pond (Dawn Hewlett) of Red Rock; Abby Pond (Brian Owens); London, England; Emily Munn (Derran), Boiestown. Loving “Papa” to Cynthia, Mallory, Sahara, Asa, Tatum, Aidan and Aubrey. Also survived by brothers: Murray Pond, Fredericton, Fred Pond (Pat), Moncton; Wendell Pond (Edith), Robert Pond (Anne), Dean Pond (Joyce) all of Bellville, On.; Clifton Pond (Betty Lou) of Parkers Ridge; Lloyd Pond (Alice) of Boiestown, Donald Pond (Kay) of Taxis River; Ronald Pond (Debbie) of Hampton and sisters Emily Hunter (Merle) of Astle; Shirlee Logan of Grand Bay Westfield. Also survived by sister-in law Shirley Pond (Harry McLeod), chosen brother Kendall Doak (Norma) of Boiestown and a special young friend Michael McCloskey of Yellowknife and many nieces, nephews and friends; each held a special place in his heart. Predeceased by his parents Everard & Phyllis (Stewart) Pond, his in-laws Murray & Merle Calhoun, his brothers Ernest Pond and Everard Pond Jr., nephews Wayne Pond and Kevin Pond. Ivan was a member of the Boiestown United Church, Landmark Lodge No 51 F & A M, Luxor Shrine, Hillcrest Chapter # 40 O.E.S. Ivan was a well known and well loved resident of the Miramichi, he worked for 27 years at Matthew MacKay & Son Ltd., in Ludlow, he also operated his own contracting company AIP Contracting Ltd. for 10 years and an outfitting company River Crossing Adventures on the Taxis River until his health would no longer allow him to work. In his younger years Ivan loved to play Fastball and was a member of several winning Provincial Teams as well as a Maritime Championship Team. He was also an avid hunter who enjoyed many hunting seasons with his friends at his camp on the Taxis River and he loved to spend many a summer day sailing down the beautiful Miramichi River. He cherished his time spent with his family and friends and he will always be remembered for his kindness, compassion, humor and his ability to make everybody feel welcome in his home. Honorary Pallbearers will be long time friends George Black, Garth Hunter, Hubert Davis, Vaughn Ross, Brian McCloskey, Greg Dunphy, Melvin Hunter, Craig Andrews, William Burke, Glen Davis, Holly Carson, Doug Comfort, Allan Richard, Kent Davis, Howie MacKay and Harold Fairley. Visitation will take place from Miramichi Valley Funeral Home on Monday, April 13th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The memorial service will take place on Tuesday, April 14th at 2:00 p.m. from the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Beverly Daley officiating. A reception will follow at the Upper Miramichi Lions Club. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted on Monday at 6:30 p.m. followed by an Eastern Star Memorial Service. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Jeanne Calhoun Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Boiestown Community School Library or a charity of the donor’s choice. Family flowers only please.
