Obituary of Delima Mitchell

MITCHELL, DELIMA “DEL” MARY (NEE MARTIN) 1942-2019 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Del Mitchell on December 11, 2019. She is survived by her husband of over 47 years, Winston Mitchell. Also her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Kathy and Rick Powers of Fredericton, George and Lois Mitchell of Burlington ON, Bob and Kay Mitchell of Kanata ON, and Linda and Al McMillan of Surrey BC, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Melinda (Nowlan) Martin and father Allison Martin, and also an infant sister, Anna (1940). Del was born in Chatham on March 28, 1942 during a heavy snowstorm. Growing up in Escuminac, NB, she was one of those “poor” children who had to eat lobster sandwiches for lunch! She graduated from St. Michael’s Academy in Chatham, and went on to study Laboratory Technology in Saint John. Del worked at the Provincial Lab in Campbellton from 1961-1990. In 1969-1970 she upgraded her education in Halifax with a specialization in cytology. She returned to the lab in Campbellton where she was instrumental in the establishment of the cytology department there. She married the love of her life Winston in 1972, and when he was transferred to Fredericton in 1990, she accepted a position at the DECRH from which she retired in 2000. She and Winston spent 20 years travelling to their favourite vacation spot in Maui during winter months where they made many friends from around North America. Golf became another favourite pastime that she and Winston shared post retirement and they spent many hours together on the golf course, first at Gage and more recently at West Hills. Del made friends wherever she went. We will all miss her beautiful smile and her infectious laugh. She also loved dogs, and would always have a treat for those she met on her walks in the neighbourhood. Del was a devout member of St Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Nashwaaksis. Thanks to all the many friends who visited from far and wide and helped keep spirits up – too many to name each of you - and a special thank you to Margie and Marilyn for all their help during her illness. Also thank you to the nurses and staff of 4 North West and Palliative Care. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 6-8 pm. A Memorial Service will take place at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Fredericton, NB on December 14, 2019 at 11am with Father Martin Arputham and Father John Jennings as Celebrants. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Fredericton SPCA or a charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
