Obituary of Evelyn Macpherson

Evelyn Katherine Macpherson was born on 09 Aug 1922 to Mary and Arthur McGarrigle in Milltown NB, the eldest child of her family. As was typical of the times, at the age of 13 she was required to leave school and remain at home to look after her 5 siblings. Eventually in the late teenage years, she went to work with her parents at the cotton mill in the town. In the early 40’s, she met her soul mate Philipp Corning. He worked as a candy maker at Ganong’s factory in St Stephen. They fell in love and were married just before he was shipped overseas to the war in 1944. Within about a month, she was a widow. The Corning family became her anchor as they lovingly helped her deal with their great loss. After the war, she met Darrell Macpherson her second soul mate. Because the cotton mill was about to close in Milltown, they decided to go west in 1953 to search for work. Within a few months they returned to NB and settled in Fredericton. They bought an un-winterized structure in the city’s old cottage country, ie, Claremont Drive on the north side. Many happy memories are associated with the home they build from that humble cottage: their kids, the good neighbours, the river in summer, the woods via dog sled/skidoo in winter, the nearby camp in the woods, and their families – Macpherson, McGarrigle, Corning and Topolosky. She resided there for 56 years until Darrell’s death in 2009. A year later, she was living in a condo apartment on the south side with her daughter Philipa Corning. Here she enjoyed the friendship of a few friends - old and new, who were her neighbours. She is survived by her daughter Philipa Corning, Macpherson step-sons: Rob (wife Donna) and Ted (wife Jean); Joanne Macpherson (deceased husband Arnold) and Cindy Macpherson (deceased husband Roy); Corning and Seman relatives in St. Stephen; McGarrigle relatives in Fredericton, St. George, Moncton and New York State; Topolosky relatives in the USA (predominantly in Maine, and New Hampshire); and Watson relatives in New Brunswick. Indeed, she will be much missed, but fondly remembered. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Saturday, November 30, 2019 from 1-2 pm; followed by the Celebration of Evelyn’s Life at 2 pm with Rev. Joanne Barr officiating. Interment will take place in Dayton Cemetery, Fredericton, NB at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation.
