I'm really sorry about missing Jackie's celebration of life, last sunday, what an amazing woman, she stopped by my house one day shortly after I bought it. she told me it had been her's one time. She loved it and was always stopping in to talk. she left me a letter when David Coon was running for Fredericton , and she talked me into voting for him. I figured if Jackie thought he was a good guy he must be.
I'm sure you will miss Jackie lots, but take assurance that we all will, she was quite a woman, my condolences

Jackie or Jake was both a friend of my mother, Frances Firth Gammon, and my friend. My mother and Jackie attended UNB together and knew all the same people including Beaverbrook! Mum lived on University Avenue, Jackie on Shore St. So a visit with Jackie was like a visit with that heady, creative set of intellectuals of the 40s and 50s who put New Brunswick on the map of thinkers and doers.
She lived independently with wonderful student roommates well into her 90s. Her door on Shore St. was always open. Often she would be sharing the warmth by the pot-belly stove with a grandchild or a friend and one was always welcome. She loved to put people together and see what synergy evolved. When I attended the meetings at the Webster Room at the Beaverbrook Hotel Jackie introduced me as: This is Carolyn, she lives in Berlin, Germany and writes books with Holocaust survivors and she would let the conversation go on from there
I stood with Jackie celebrating LGBTQ* rights in Fredericton over two decades ago. She was there at City Hall protesting that the mayor would not announce Gay Pride Day. If there was a progressive cause, there you would find Jackie. I have never known such an unconventional, rebellious, curious, engaged person of her generation. Jackie was both friend, mentor and inspiration.
When my mother entered the home system and had memory issues it did not phase Jackie at all. She was a regular visitor for night lunch at the Farraline Place and later often made her way to the York Manor to keep up the friendship. It was always exciting when she was around. Once at the York Manor she struck up a conversation with the woman in the next room about a 70 year-old secret romance. With Jake, she did not just tell stories, she created them by just being there.
The first time I visited her Youghall cottage with my partner, Jake wasnt there. She told us to just go in through the window to open it up so I did. Later I thought to tell the neighbors that we were legitimate friends of Jake and they said: Oh, the minute you went through the window we knew it. If you had tried to go in the door, we would have been suspicious. I would like to take this opportunity to thank especially her daughter Allison for facilitating Jakes summer-long stays at the cottage these last years. I did this for my mother too and I know the love and patience and energy it involves. It is not easy holding court for a queen over years! But you did it Allison and those of us who could enjoy Jake in her Bathurst home setting all those extra summerswell, it was an immeasurable gift.
I know we are to celebrate this great long life but I will miss Jake terribly. She is irreplaceable and part of my heart has died with Jake.
Carolyn Gammon, Berlin, Germany

What a beautifully written tribute to our dear friend Jackie. She would be proud. We are so grateful we spend some time with her when we were home in June. There is no place we would rather be on Sunday than the Beaverbrook but distance is a problem. I am sure the music, stories and laughter will be heard all the way to Windsor, Ontario.
