Obituary of Gerald McCully

MCCULLY, GERALD WILLIAM (GERRY) - It is with sadness that the family of Gerald McCully announces his death which occurred on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Hospice House, Fredericton. He was 78 years old. Born in Elgin, NB, July 29, 1941, he was the son and only child of the late Thomas and the late Marjorie (Bannister) McCully. He was a devoted husband to his widow Margaret Sisk-McCully married 53 years. He was a devoted father to their precious daughter, Tracy Ann McCully. He is also survived by two dear foster sisters, Sharon (Venne) Babineau (Marcel) and Sandra (Venne) Price, both of Alberta; survived by dear cousins Laurence Martin and family; also by dear school friends and past co-workers of NBTel/BellAliant. Also left to mourn his death are his brother-in-law: William (Billy) Sisk, Pokeshaw, NB; sisters-in-law: Clara Sisk, Ste-Geneviève, QC; Rita Sisk, Ile Bizard, QC; and Dorothy Sisk Poirier (Georges) Burlington, ON. Uncle to: Denis Poirier (spouse Annie Rémillard) and family, Ottawa; and Annie (Poirier) Picheca (Mike) and family of Stoney Creek, ON. Gerald was a member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church (10 years), Nashwaaksis United Church (39 years) and Wilmot United Church (4 years). He was a Network Technician with NBTel and Bell/Aliant for 37 years, retiring in 1998. He obtained his Private Pilot’s License at the Fredericton Flying Club in 1980. He had a great love of aircraft and enjoyed his passion for building model airplanes since he was a boy and up to the time of his illness. He was an avid reader, interested in history, genealogy, aircraft and gardening. He shared his harvest with friends and neighbours. He loved fishing, hunting and cross-country skiing. A special thank-you to all doctors and their staff, for their attentive and compassionate care: Andrea Hickey (family doctor); Ashley McLellan (Urologist); Ghadeer Anan (Oncologist); Palliative Care Consultants: Dr. Gordon McDonald and Dr. Jennifer Gillis-Doyle. To Dr. Tom Hickey, optometrist, Dr, Luis Riveros, Ophthalmologist; Dentists: Dr. Matthew Moore and ret. Dr. Ron McMullin. To the Extra-Mural Nurses who visited Gerald since June 2018: special mention to Miranda and to his Primary Nurse Debbie who together spent the longest time visiting Gerry. Debbie and Dr. McDonald worked above and beyond when Gerald was ready to be admitted to hospital Palliative Care. A special mention to Social Worker and friend, Brenda Haslam Layden on duty that day, for her compassion and encouraging words. Special thanks to Dr Sainz and her staff at Hospice House, an unmeasurable gift of care for Gerald’s final 4 days. A Funeral Service will be held from York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 2 pm, officiated by Rev. Robert (Bob) Jones retired United Church minister, with pianist from Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, David Berry, with church choir members to which Margaret belongs, with choir soloist Helen McKinnon Bagnell, accompanied by Ron Bagnell. Special thanks to all. A private family interment will take place at the Douglas Rural Cemetery at a later date. Donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to the Elgin Cemetery Fund, 1627 Route 895, Elgin, NB, E4Z 2M9 or to Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church Maintenance Fund, 512 Charlotte Street, Fredericton, NB, E3B 1M2. Margaret and Tracy extend deepest gratitude to those who will have helped with the Service and to all who have shown support during this difficult time and are traveling from out of town. A thank you to the Ladies’ Group of Saint Andrews Presbyterian church led by Colleen Watson who will provide the food for the reception following the Service.
