Obituary of Ivan Saunders

It is with sadness that the family of Ivan James Saunders announces his passing after a battle with cancer on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in Fredericton, New Brunswick at the age of 75. Ivan will be remembered by his children, Rachel (Claude) and James (Raynelle); his grandchildren, Kieran, Katy, Tess and Malcolm; as well as family, friends, acquaintances and former colleagues in New Brunswick, Saskatchewan and throughout Canada. Ivan was predeceased by his parents, James A. Saunders and Margaret Helen Saunders (nee Parker) of Woodlands, New Brunswick and his daughter, Megan Saunders. Ivan had a rich and rewarding career as an historian and archivist. Ivan graduated from the University of New Brunswick and worked for Parks Canada documenting Canada’s military and architectural history. After leaving Parks Canada, Ivan worked as an historian on the restoration of Government House in Regina. Beginning in the 1980s until his retirement in 2013, Ivan’s work focused on capturing and preserving the history of Saskatchewan: as the Archivist for the City of Regina, in his work for the Saskatchewan Archives Board and finally for the Provincial Capital Commission. Ivan also greatly enjoyed his work with ARMA Canada where he served for many years as the national conference director. Known to family and friends as a pet lover, wine connoisseur and staunch conservative, Ivan spent the majority of his retirement at his camp, tending to his garden and apple trees and enjoying being back in the woods he loved. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Sunday, February 3, 2019 from 2-4 pm. No flowers by request, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
