Obituary of Boyd MacTavish

Dad went peacefully to his eternal home on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. He was born on May 22, 1930 in Strathadam, NB to the late James Richard “Dick” MacTavish and Mabel Erma (Mullin) MacTavish. Boyd is survived by his son, Richard (Debbie); daughters, Nancy (Ron) and Judy; seven grandchildren, Mark (Meg), Brent, Jeff, Ashley (Levi), Stephen, Tim and Sarah; as well as eight great grandchildren. Boyd was predeceased by his wife, Helen Louise (McQuade) MacTavish; brother, Charlie; sister in law, Betty MacTavish (Don Prime); nephews, Donnie, Timmy and son in law, Bert Worthen. Boyd was an active athlete in baseball and hockey, until he was stricken with polio in 1952, at age 22. In his later years, he enjoyed curling and golf. He was a member of the Masons (Masonic Lodge Alexandria #33); the Shriners Scottish Rite; the Golden Club and the Fredericton Golf Club. He was very involved at the Gibson Memorial United Church, a former clerk of session, taught Sunday school and was a greeter (candy man). Boyd was a trustee on many boards. In 1967, he founded MacTavish for Sports Ltd. Where polio took away his playing ability he could stay in the game by having a store to serve athletes and hear about their sporting activities. His other venture was entertaining customers at Joe’s Diner with mom. Special thanks to doctors, Barry, Kerr and their wonderful staff for many years of compassionate care. Visitation will take place at Gibson Memorial United Church on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 12-2pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 2 pm with Rev. Kelly Higgins. Interment will take place in Sunny Bank Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment at the church. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Fredericton Food Bank, Homeless Shelter or the charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolence may be offered through www.yorkfh.com Dad always taught us to be kind to others and help those in need. “The greatest gift we ever had was a gift from God and we called him Dad”.
