Obituary of Dorothy Loughrey
The passing of Dorothy Isobel Loughrey of Fredericton, New Brunswick, widow of Carl T. Loughrey, occurred on August 18, 2018 at Shannex Brunswick Hall.
Born on October 5, 1918 in Bruce County Ontario, she was the daughter of the late William and Priscilla Howe. Dorothy attended school in Underwood and Port Elgin before moving to London, Ontario to attend Business College. She met Carl in London while she was working for the Department of National Defense during the war years.
When Carl returned from overseas, Dorothy retired from her formal job to raise their family of three sons. During their marriage they also lived in North York for 10 years, Fredericton for 7 and finished their married life in Etobicoke. Carl died in 1986 and Dorothy stayed in Etobicoke until moving back to Fredericton in 2012 to be close to two of her sons.
Dorothy contributed her time and talents to many community organizations and charities. A founder of the church group, Islington Day Club that assisted people living with disabilities; she also was very active in her church including United Church Women and the Board of Stewards. She was awarded the Order of Islington United Church for her dedication and untiring work within the congregation. She also was an active member of the IODE, Fredericton Curling Club, and Meals on Wheels as well as being a neighborhood canvasser for most major charities. For her volunteer efforts she was made a Life Member of the New Brunswick Hospital Auxiliary.
Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Ted (Norma) of McLeod Hill, NB, their children Jil (Sean) their daughter Alexandra of Acton, ON, Matthew (Kerri) their children Karson and Kaden of Finland, ON; Ron (Carol) their children Margaret (Liam) of Fredericton and Katherine (Jeff) their children Farley, Simon, Gideon and Lucie of Cross Creek, NB; and Doug (Lynda) their children Jessica, her daughter Christina, and Grant (Barb), their daughter Lila of Whitehorse YT; numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law Russell (Dorothy), Amer (Donelda); nieces Betty and Marlene, and nephew Donald ON.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Shannex Brunswick Hall for making Dorothy’s life richer and more enjoyable over the past 6+ years and especially the past several months.
A visitation will take place at York Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 7 to 9 pm with a Celebration of Life on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 10:30 am at Islington United Church, Etibicoke, ON with the interment to follow.
