Obituary of Reid Saunders

The peaceful passing of Reid Bunnel Saunders, loving husband of Ethel (Burnham) Saunders, occurred in the arms of his loved ones on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at his home. Born on December 3, 1925 in Riverglade, NB he was the son of the late Reid and Nettie (Alward) Saunders. Reid joined the Canadian Armed Forces in January, 1943 as a boy soldier and retired, at the rank of Major, after nearly 30 years of service. During his time serving he and Ethel were posted all across Canada from Vancouver to Newfoundland, where he was the Base Commander. He also was posted overseas as occupation forces in Germany, then as peacekeeping forces in the Middle East. After retiring from the military they moved to Fredericton and he worked for the Department of Social Services then the Department of Health where he became the Director of Medicare. He was a devoted member of Christ Church Cathedral where he was involved in many church activities such as the Bishop and Chapter. Reid was a member of the Fredericton Christian Forum and the Golden Club. He was known as a true gentleman. In addition to his devoted wife of 75 years, Reid is survived by his daughters, Pamela Miller (David) and Gwyn Schellenberg (Dave); grandchildren, Emily and Jonathan Miller, Kate and Mike (Ruth) Schellenberg, and Lisa Taylor (Max); sister, Beatrice Brown; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Reid is predeceased by his sisters, Emma Colpitts and Enid MacDonald. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 1 to 2 pm at York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, Fredericton, NB. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 2 pm with Dean Geoffrey Hall officiating. Interment will take place at Fair Haven Cemetery, Moncton, NB at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
