Obituary of Samuel Porter

The passing of Samuel Roger Porter, of Fredericton, NB, husband of Nancy (Jensen) Porter, occurred after a long struggle with health issues. He passed on May 8, 2018 at Hospice Fredericton. Born on January 30, 1948 in Plaster Rock, NB, he was a son of the late Graydon and Louise (Wedge) Porter. Sam worked in the Forestry Industry for almost 40 years, in various capacities, and spent the bulk of his career at Frasers in Plaster Rock. He was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, New Denmark, NB and then a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church after moving to Fredericton in 2011. Sam enjoyed reading, painting and spending time with his grandkids. He was a sports fanatic, especially for baseball which he played in his youth. Besides his wife, Sam is survived by his daughters, Michelle Deleavey (Calvin) and Melissa Brentumi; grandchildren, Andrew Deleavey, Anaya and Malachi Brentumi; sister, Sally McCarthy; brothers, Danny (Lori) and Dennis (Denise); sisters-in-law, Aleta Porter, Shelley Baker (Wade) and Julie Mason (Steve); brothers-in-law, Gary Jensen (Barb), Randy Jensen (Heather), Peter Jensen (Cindy) and Paul Jensen (Linda) and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Marsha Porter; brother, Larry Porter; mother and father-in-law, Glenna and Sterling Jensen and brother-in-law, Rick Jensen. All that knew him loved his antics. Sam was known for his sense of humour, storytelling, performances and larger than life personality. He will be missed by many and leaves behind many great memories and reasons to laugh. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 6 to 8 pm. Visitation will also take place at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, New Denmark, NB on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 2 to 5 pm. A Memorial Service will be held from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at 2 pm with Pastor Ralph Weigold officiating. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice Fredericton or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
