Obituary of Douglas Shields

On February 9, 2018 Douglas William Shields passed away peacefully at his home. He was the son of the late William and Birdie Shields, born on the beautiful Nashwaak River on August 29, 1930. Doug was a member of Centennial United Church being a corner stone for many years. He retired from Fairview Jeep in 1995 after being parts manager for many years, prior to this he worked for Ashfields as shop foreman and Colter Construction as a heavy equipment mechanic. After he retired he spent many hours with his most precious grandchildren. Doug loved to travel especially his day trips. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Shirley (Merritt); daughter, Heather Bell (Brent); grandchildren, Haley Noble (Colton) and Cody Bell (Ashley); sister, Mary Ardythe Cameron; sisters-in-law, Mellie Boone, Freda Merritt and Dorothy Merritt; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers-in- law, Ross Cameron, Gerald Boone, Enis Merritt, Vincent Merritt and Wilfred Wilson; sister-in-law, Althea Wilson. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, February13, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held from York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 2 pm with Rev. Yvette Swan officiating. Interment will take place at Centennial United Church Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Centennial United Church Cemetery Fund, Centennial United Church or charity of the donor’s choice.
