Obituary of Sarah Wellner

Our family is very sad to announce the passing of Sarah Wellner, or, as we lovingly referred to her: “Granny By The Brook”, “Granny By The Coal Mines” and sometimes, due to her recent hearing loss,” GRANNY!”. Born in Inverness, Nova Scotia, on October 19, 1926, Sarah was a proud Cape Bretoner, a true coal miner’s daughter. She spent more than 20 years working at Sears in Fredericton, a job she loved dearly. With a life full of laughs, movies (Turner Classic) and, yes, a little rum, she taught many how to live every day to the fullest, even if she was a bit stubborn about it. She was a loyal friend, and whether she was beating you at cards or asking you to sing and dance to “Delta Dawn” with her, she was always a joy to be around. She will be sadly missed by her children, Lynn (Jamie) and Blake; grandchildren, Natasha (Carl), James (Vanessa), John-Ryan (Laura) and Michael (Richard); great-grandchildren, Zachary, Brianna, James and Allie. Sarah also loved her animals, which in her lifetime included Corkie, Misty, Patches, Bumper and Rex. She is also survived by her sister, Hermine Getto, and many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Sarah was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Matilda (Gillis) Getto; husband, John (the love of her life); and siblings Rosie Habicht, Margaret Thurbide, Leonie Hadley, Catherine Marchesin, Georgina MacDonald, Matilda Blouin, Sylvia Medjuck and Carl Getto. We would like to thank her dear friends Sheila, Norma, Audrey and Sharon, among many others, as well as Dr. Queen and the other fantastic doctors and caring nurses of 4SW at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 from 7-9 pm at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 11 am, St. Theresa's Catholic Church. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chalmers Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com. Go Jays.
