Obituary of Donald Hawkes

Donald Jackson Hawkes (1939 - 2017) died on October 11th from injuries sustained in an accident. He was the son of Joe and Margaret Hawkes. The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff of the ER and the ICU at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital and the staff of the ICU at the Saint John Regional Hospital for the amazing care they provided to Don - thank you so much! Don was a consummate family man; he watched over and took care of all of us. He was our rock! He is survived by his wife, Ruth; mother, Margaret; daughter, Lynn (Chris Banks) of Fredericton; and son, Michael (Krista Daigle) of Woodman’s Point. He left behind the five grandchildren he adored - Kelsey (Cyril Ridler) and Joe Banks (Melissa Boucher), both of Fredericton, Maggie (Tim Pearce) of Eastleigh, UK, and “the girls” Molly and Tala Hawkes. He will also be missed by four (soon to be five) great-grandchildren - Taylor and Thomas Banks, Kylee and Caden Ridler and a work in progress - Alex Pearce; sisters, Margie Randall (Alden) and Janie Robertson (Gary); several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Joe, his son, Robert and his grandson, Dexter. His other love was the company he worked with - four generations of the Colter family - for almost 60 years. His work defined him. He was the epitome of a “company man”. Don was voracious volunteer and was the recipient of numerous local, provincial and national awards for his efforts. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm. A Memorial Service will be held from Gibson Memorial United Church on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 2 pm with Rev. Kelly Higgins officiating. Reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers - please consider donations to Gibson Memorial United Church, Swimming New Brunswick or a charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
