Obituary of Gordon Currie

Gordon Elbridge Currie, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, left this world peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2017, after a very courageous and well-fought battle with cancer. We are extremely proud of his strength and amazed at his strong will over the past months. Born in Mactaquac, NB on November 30, 1938, he was the son of the late Elbridge and Alma (Timmins) Currie and the husband of Marilyn (Gass) Currie. He was a resident of Keswick Ridge for over 50 years. Gordon ran his own upholstery business for over 30 years, having only retired in January when his health wouldn’t permit him to work any longer. He meticulously re-upholstered many couches and chairs, but more importantly always took the time to learn about his customers – who they were, where they were from and how he might know their family. Gordon was known and loved by his family, friends and neighbours for his big smile, hearty laugh and playful antics. He maintained his sense of humour to the end, telling stories to the nurses and joking with doctors and hospital staff. Through his life, Gordon enjoyed a family/work/play balance. He played golf and curled, he served his community as a member of the Keswick Ridge Fire Department for many years and he was a member of the Keswick Ridge United Church and the United Commercial Travellers, Council 746. He always enjoyed a good game of cribbage, and had regular Scrabble matches with Marilyn and frequent dominoes nights with neighbours. In recent years, he became a bird watcher and faithfully fed “his” chickadees. Gordon is survived by the love of his life, his cherished wife Marilyn; daughter, Krista Rae (Dana) of Keswick Ridge and son, Brent Currie (Erin) of Yellowknife; grandchildren, Adam, Ethan and Katie Rae, Aidan Currie, and two step-grandchildren, Liam and Conor Webb; nephew, Edison Brewer; sister-in-law, Patricia Gass. In addition to his parents and 2 infant sisters, he was predeceased by his sister, Anna Brewer; two brothers-in-law Allison Gass and Thomas Brewer. There will be a visitation on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 6 to 9 pm at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive. A celebration of life will take place at the Keswick Ridge United Church on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2 pm with Rev. David Luker officiating. Interment will take place at the Mactaquac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Keswick Ridge United Church Memorial Fund.
