Doralice Basque

Obituary of Doralice Basque

It is with very heavy hearts that her family announces the death of Doralice (Doris) Basque, of Fredericton NB, at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital, on January 21, 2017. Doralice was born on January 5th, 1936 in Tracadie NB. She was the daughter of the late Ernest & Melodia (Roussel) Landry. Doralice is survived by her husband, Joseph Athanase Basque; children, Dianne Brewer (Edison), Ronald (Debbie), Joanne Manuel (Brent), & Brenda Basque-Ludvik (Robert); grandchildren, Leticia Brewer, Jessica Smith & Alexander Brewer, Christopher & Jeremy Basque, Chelsey & Kristen Manuel, Jacob & Benjamin Basque; great-grandchildren Kayden Basque & Thomas Smith; siblings, Jeannine, Normand, Mireille, Claude, Valmond, Huguette & Fernande; Doralice will also be missed by several nieces & nephews. In addition to her parents, Doralice was also predeceased by her middle child, a son, Roger Basque (1958-1967). Doralice retired from managing Reitmans clothing store in Kings Place after 20 years with the company. Doralice was devoted to her family, & the Catholic Church. She was a member of Saint Theresa’s parish, although she loved to hear the Midnight Mass choir on Christmas Eve, at Saint Dunstan’s & enjoyed Mass there on several occasions, as well. She & her husband enjoyed camping with friends & relatives, & attending bluegrass music festivals on their trips. Although Doris & Joe enjoyed camping every summer when raising their family, once retired, she & her husband spent most of their summers travelling through New Brunswick & Quebec. Doralice was a very sharp-minded, capable & independent woman, who took care of her husband (her one & only love, with over 62yrs of marriage), as well as her home, up to the day she went into the hospital, 2 weeks before her death. That was her wish, & we know she is grateful that she was able to do so, for as long as she could. In fact, she had just taken down her Christmas tree & baked her good friend a friendship cake a day or two before going into the hospital. Doralice always said she wanted to live to be 100, & anyone who knew her, could attest, that she would be the one to do it. Sadly, she was taken too soon, having suffered fatal side-effects of oral chemo in her first 2 weeks of treatment, which was taken as a precaution, following emergency surgery just 2 months earlier. There will be a short visitation for family only, prior to the Funeral Mass, which will be held at Saint Dunstan’s Parish on Thursday, January 26th, 2017 at 12:05 with Father Bill Brennan & Father John Jennings officiating. A reception will follow the Funeral. Interment will take place at Hermitage Cemetery, Fredericton NB, at a later date. As Doralice always put other’s needs ahead of her own, & didn’t want anyone in her presence to be hungry, for those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Fredericton Foodbank.
