Obituary of John Smith

Smith, John Joseph The passing of John Joseph Smith of Fredericton, NB, husband of Elizabeth (Douglass) Smith, occurred on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Veterans Health Unit, Fredericton, NB. Born on October, 19, 1919 in Millville, NL, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Ryan) Smith. John was an Army Veteran. He had various occupations including, mechanic, milkman, delivery driver, fisherman and loading potatoes in boxcars. John drove the first truck in his village. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Beaverbrook Branch # 80. He was an avid cribbage and bingo player. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his daughter, Margaret Burton (Dana) of Brockville, ON; son, Gerald Smith (Jeanne) of New Dublin, ON; step daughters, JoAnne Seamone (Johnny) and Kathy Stewart; step sons, Robert Stewart, Ricky Stewart (Jeannie), Charles Stewart (Catherine), Dana Stewart and Martin Stewart (Karen); numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; special grandsons, Thomas Stewart and John “J.J.” Burton; half sister, Gertrude Nugent (John); half brothers, Arthur Smith, and Michael Smith; chosen son, Michael Roddick; chosen brother, Brian Skeete; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his step son, Douglas Stewart; sisters, Mildred Stevens and Mary Anna Sampson; brothers, Thomas and Patrick Smith; half brother, Ernest Smith; son-in-law, Richard Burton. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 7-9 pm and Sunday, August 7, 2016 from 7-9 pm. A Legion Tribute Service will take place on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 6:45 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 4 pm with Rev. Lawrence Meade officiating. Interment will take place in the Taymouth Community Cemetery, Taymouth, NB. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Taymouth Community Cemetery, Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or the charity of the donor’s choice.
