Obituary of Donald MacLaggan

On July 25, 2016, Donald "Donnie" T. MacLaggan passed peacefully, surounded by family, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. He couldn't imagine spending one single day without his sweetheart, Mary (Cawthra) MacLaggan, who passed away the day previous, and he didn't have to. He happily slipped his hand in hers, where she wasn't waiting long, to walk through Heaven's gates together. Donald was born on July 9, 1928 to parents Robert and Marjorie (Titus) MacLaggan of Devon, NB. He graduated from Fredericton High School and went on to have a long and fulfilling career as a Fire Fighter with the City of Fredericton; retiring as District Fire Chief. Besides being passionate about his job, Donnie enjoyed activities such as hunting, fishing, and sailing on Grand Lake--usually way too fast with best friend Ab. Donnie had a signature smile and wink that gave away his mischievous side, but that quickly got put in line when he met Mary. It was love at first sight and they were married on June 28, 1949. They were inseparable even in life and death and their love was infectious! They celebrated 67 wonderful years of marriage together--their last anniversary side by side in the hospital. Early on, they enjoyed spending their free time trailoring with friends and family across the country. Many special memories were also made spending a number of winters in Florida and their summers at "the cottage" on Grand Lake. Donnie was a longtime member of Devon Park Baptist Church. Donald is survived by his two sons, David (Sharon) MacLaggan of Fredericton, NB and Peter (Kim) MacLaggan of Riverview, NB; eight grandchildren, Tedford (Marla) MacLaggan of Halifax, NS, Timothy (Frances) MacLaggan of Moncton, NB, Marylee MacLaggan of Moncton, NB, Laura MacLaggan of Riverview, NB, Colin MacLaggan of Riverview, NB, David Andrew (Angela) MacLaggan of Edmonton, AB, Jeffrey (Natalie) MacLaggan of Fredericton, NB and Sarah (MacLaggan) Dillman of Rothesay, NB; several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Cawthra) MacLaggan, infant grandson, Ryan MacLaggan, and siblings Elizabeth Fraser, Douglas MacLaggan, Margaret Pugh, and Ellen McGillvary. He was the last living memeber of his immediate family. Visitation is to take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 2 pm at Devon Park Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Woodcock and Rev. Robert Dunlop assisting. There will be a reception to follow and interment will take place in Sunny Bank Cemetery. For those who wish, donations of remembrance may be made to the "Boot Drive" (Muscular Dystrophy) or charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
