Obituary of Marjorie Cook

Life Legacy It is with heavy hearts that we announce the very peaceful passing of our precious mother, Beryl Marjorie Elizabeth Cook, on July 11, 2016. Born March 21, 1925 in Saint John, NB, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ida (Schurman) Smith. Mom was a homemaker for most of her married life but as a young woman worked as a secretary, served in the Armed Forces and in later years was on staff in the Radiology Department of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Mom was a faithful member of the Nashwaaksis Baptist Church and was involved in several of the ministries there, as well as volunteering at the Fredericton Community Kitchen. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. Mom had a servant’s heart and was always looking out for the needs of others. She was loved by all who knew her. Her kitchen table was always welcoming to anyone and everyone and she was known as one of the best cooks around. She recently told us “I grew up a Christian from my mother’s knee”, and so, a beautiful image we will always treasure is Mom kneeling in prayer beside her bed each night. Both Mom and Dad loved to travel and enjoyed the benefits of Dad’s employment with Air Canada. Mom is survived by her children, Gregory (Jacqueline) Cook, Janet White and Diane (Marcus) Hodgson all from the Fredericton area, Gary (Barbara) Cook, Moncton, Karen (Reg) Dixon, Westport, ON, and Dawn George, Halifax; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mona Harrington, Ottawa, Jean Smith, Montreal, and Shirley (Bill) Mitchell, Saint John and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Wendell Cook; granddaughter, Katie White; son-in-law, Duane White; brothers, George, Charlie, Ron, Norwood; sisters, Hilda Yorke, Christine Daly and Josephine Agg. The family would like to thank the staff and doctors at Shannex Parkland Thomas Hall and Brunswick Hall for their care and attention given to Mom during the past 5 years. In addition, the family would also like to thank Dr. Jayram for the wonderful care that he provided to Mom over many years. Visitation will be held at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, July 14, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 15, 2 pm at Nashwaaksis Baptist Church, Edgewood Drive, Fredericton, NB with Rev. Kevin Culberson officiating. Reception will follow in the Church gymnasium. Interment will take place in Fredericton Rural Cemetery immediately following the reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes to Crandall University, Fredericton and Area Down Syndrome Society, Fredericton Community Kitchen or charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
