Obituary of Neeltje Pelkman

Neeltje (Buitendyk) Pelkman of Fredericton, NB, wife of the late Arie Pelkman, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on March 4, 1922 in Ridderkerk, Holland, she was the daughter of the late Pieter and Maaike (Legerstee) Buitendyk. Neeltje married Arie Cornelis on June 21, 1944 in Rotterdam, Holland and came to Canada in 1956. She and her husband were part of the founding Dutch families that started the Fredericton Christian Reformed Church, where she was an active member and taught Sunday school for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting. Neeltje is survived by eight children, Catharina (Gary) Lenehan of Woodstock, NB, Willem “Bill” Pelkman of Calgary, AB, Maureen (Gerry) Blom of Fredericton, NB, Helena Sutherland of Kitchener, ON, Margaret (Eddison) Moore of Fredericton, NB, Alice Pelkman (Klaas Borst) of Guelph, ON, Christine Pelkman (Andy Marzano) of Medina, PA, James Pelkman of Kitchener, ON; 18 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her grandson, Mark Blom; two infant sisters, and sister, Lena Buitendyk; brothers, Willem, Pieter and Adrianus Buitendyk. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at the Fredericton Christian Reformed Church, 121 McAdam Avenue, Fredericton, NB on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 2 pm with Rev. Harold A. Winter officiating. Interment will take place in Douglas Rural Cemetery with a reception to follow in the church. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Fredericton Christian Reformed Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
