Obituary of Georgie Edwards
The passing of Georgie Elizabeth (Willis) Edwards, of Fredericton, NB, wife of the late John Robert Edwards, occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Oromocto Public Hospital. Born on April 17, 1922 in Kingston, PEI, she was a daughter of the late Bertram and Sarah Willis.
Georgie was a native “Prince Edward Islander”. She began her teaching career there after graduating from Teachers College in Charlottetown at the age of 17. Her husband, John’s (Johnny) job brought Georgie and her family to Fredericton in 1959. Johnny died suddenly in 1963. Georgie resumed teaching, and with determination and support of family and friends, she remained in Fredericton. She raised her family and had a long career as an elementary school teacher at Park Street School. After retirement in the early 1980’s, Georgie maintained close contact with her many teaching friends, being a chartered member of one of her favourite clubs, the “Friendship Club”. Georgie was an avid gardener, and her yellow bungalow on Cherry Avenue was a destination for many who dropped in to see her beautiful rose gardens. She remained active during her retirement, visiting family, and taking special trips with her friends. In 2001, Georgie decided to downsize, moving to an apartment on Reynolds Street. Here, she and a number of other tenants and friends established a luxurious garden on the property. In 2011, Georgie moved to Shannex/Governer Hall, where she renewed old acquaintances and made numerous new friends. Georgie was best characterized as the little lady with an outsized amount of energy and vitality. The family thanks the staff of Shannex, as well as the staff of Oromocto Hospital, for their care and assistance.
Georgie is survived by her daughter, Fay Campbell (Duncan) of Fredericton, NB; her son, J. Alan Edwards (Margaret) of Kennebunkport, ME; six grandchildren, Christopher, Andrew, Jill, Lauren, Taylor and Anne; ten great grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Kitson of PEI.
