Obituary of Robert Dickison
The passing of Robert “Bob” Bedford Bennett Dickison of Fredericton, NB, husband of Irene (Black) Dickison occurred on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at York Care Centre, Fredericton, NB. Born on August 21, 1928 in Newcastle, NB, he was the son of the late Amos and Minnetta (Betts) Dickison of Doaktown, NB.
Bob retired from UNB as a Professor of Forest Meteorology. He was a member of the Nashwaaksis Baptist Church. Bob was also a life member of the Nashwaaksis Y's Men Club, serving as President and on many committees for his local club, at Maritime level as Regional Director, Canadian area as President and International Council Member. In 1983, Bob received the Ernie Bell Award in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the Youth Educational Exchange Program at the national and international level for Y’s Men over a period of ten years.
Bob started his career with the Meteorological Service of Canada as an aviation weather forecaster in support of RCAF operations in Chatham, NB. He transferred to Germany in 1953 for three years before returning to Chatham. He relocated to Fredericton in 1960 where he established the city’s first weather reporting services. After twenty years with the weather service, he accepted a professorship at UNB, retiring in 1989.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his children, Hugh Dickison of Fredericton, NB, Ruth Lindsay (John) of Burton, NB, Larry Dickison (Kathy) of St. John’s, NL, Joanne Fitzgerald (Bob) of Fredericton, NB, Beth Craig (Andy) of Pickering, ON, Jackie Dickison of Mississauga, ON; grandchildren, Joshua, Virginia, Jonathan, Shannon, Karen, Scott, Heather, Jennifer, Gregory, Zack, Rebecca, Jason, Jamie, Becky, Lauren, Robert, Thomas and Mitchell; twelve great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters in law, Agnes Stevens (Lawrence), Connie Allen (Joe), Noreen Bemrose (Ronald), Betty Black (Hugh) and Josie Black (Hedley); brothers in law, Eldon, Laurie (Edith) and Audrey.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his infant grandson, Nathaniel; brothers, Willis (Joan), Harland (Elsie) Dickison; sisters in law, Isobel Black (Eldon), Sadie Fowler (Nelson) and Leola Gulliver (Alex); brothers in law, Manley Black (Beth), Hedley Black and Hugh Black.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held at Nashwaaksis Baptist Church on ¬¬¬¬Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 2 pm with Rev. Paul Ross officiating and Rev. Brian Steeves assisting.
