Obituary of Faye Calhoun

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Faye Anna Calhoun, on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton, NB. She was born in Upsalquitch, NB on February 23, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Enoch Bamford and the late Hilda (Borden) Bamford. Faye is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Manley Calhoun; daughter, Susan of Saint John; son, Larry (Mary McIntosh) of Fredericton; sister, Beatrice McNulty of Moncton; sister-in-law, Mildred Bamford of Fredericton, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by son, Brent; brother, Donald Bamford, and sister, Daisy Curtis. After graduating from Provincial Normal School in 1940, Faye taught school for more than 30 years. She taught at several schools, including the one-room school in Parkers Ridge, where she captured the heart of a local young man, who later became her husband. She then enrolled in Immanuel Bible School, Newcastle Bridge, graduating in 1951. She later taught in Springfield, NB, where she and her friend Maisie Lyons also pastored the local Pentecostal church, a pioneering vocation for young women during that era. She spent most of her career teaching English at the Upper Miramichi Regional High School in Boiestown, NB, retiring in 1982. Following her retirement, Faye enjoyed many activities, including teaching the College and Career class at Sunset Church, travelling throughout North America, vanquishing opponents at Checkers, and politely but gleefully correcting the grammar of her family and close friends. Visitation will be held at the York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 7-9 pm and at Gateway of Hope Assembly, Boiestown, NB on Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the Gateway of Hope Assembly, Boiestown, NB on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 2 pm with Rev. Stephen Ashfield officiating. Interment will take place at the Parkers Ridge Cemetery. Reception will follow at the church. Donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Faye had many wonderful care providers while coping with the challenges of Parkinson’s disease. The family would particularly like to express their gratitude to her home caregivers, Norma Waugh and Marg Humble, and the extramural program staff, and to Dr. Ann Collins and the staff at the Pine Grove Nursing Home for their excellent care, warmth and kindness.
