Obituary of M. Janice Hawkins

On Sept 13th Janice celebrated her 101st birthday and announced that she was “one fortunate old woman”! Days later she decided it was time and she died peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2014. Her fortune was counted in the people in her life: her husband James (Jim), parents Herman and Etta (Estey) Brewer and siblings, Winston (Margaret), Audrey, Dellas (Florence), Lorne and Arthur (Mary) all deceased. She was a devoted “Mum” to her daughters: Audrey Anne Hawkins of Winnipeg, MB, Sharon Hawkins of Maple Ridge, NB and Reta Carey (Thomas) of Calgary, AB, “Gramma” to Tanya (Paul) Draganac, Jillian (Gavin) Campbell, Mark Carey and Scott Carey and “Great Mama” to Gareth and Tessa Campbell. She was blessed by the affection shown by her many nieces and nephews and her sister-in-law Pauline. A graduate of Fredericton Business College (1930), Janice’s career added many colleagues to the list of friends. Her work as secretary with H.C. Greenlaw Limited took her to Millville. She met and married Jim - the man with gorgeous blue eyes across the table from her at Lizzie Love’s boarding house. When they moved to Fredericton she worked for the Provincial Dept. of Municipal Affairs, retiring in 1978. Janice was a woman of faith and treasured the fellowship found in the Baptist churches in Millville, Burtt’s Corner and Brunswick St in Fredericton. She was a charter member of the United Baptist Women’s Missionary Society. Like her siblings, Janice loved music. She sang in the choir, in ladies trio’s, played the piano and organ. Her family will remember her alto voice and her playing the piano at the annual Brewer family hymn sings. She was a talented seamstress and members of her family are proud to display her handmade quilts, crochet and knit work. Janice was an avid traveler and had a great love of learning. She got her first computer at 89 and until recently stayed in touch with family and friends via email and Skype. Janice and her family would like to thank the staff of Thomas Hall, Brunswick Hall and Farraline Place for their care and kindness. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Friday, October 3, 2014 at 11 am with Rev. Greg Geldart officiating. Interment will take place in Hawkins Corner Cemetery, Millville, NB. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Hawkins Corner Cemetery Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.
