I was in Mark's homeroom class the very first year he taught school. Yes, I was in grade 7 at Sheriff Junior High,Sydney, Nova Scotia. That was a long, long time ago but I will never forget how exciting his classes were and how wonderfully kind he was to me. I went on to Holy Angels High School so I did not have him for a teacher then since he was teaching at Sydney Academy. I always thought about Mark and his natural ways of motivating students. I became a teacher myself and retired just ten years ago. I always remembered Mr. Johnstone. I send sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Frances and the Johnstone Family:
We are truly sorry to hear of Mark's passing.
Harvey and I remember Mark as an someone who linked our families in spite of distance. When you met Mark you were bound to be reminded that you were part of the Johnstone family; he had an exceptional ability to make you feel included. Using his considerable knowledge of family history Mark would introduce you to relatives and characters from the past and the present. These exchanges always gave you a fresh perspective and enriched your understanding.
We also remember Mark as someone who imparted a sense of enthusiasm and optimism to those he met. Mark engaged you.
But foremost in our recollections is this. Mark was constant and compassionate in his devotion to family. We remember, for instance, that following his father's death, Mark provided strong support to his mother and his siblings. We are confident that these wonderful qualities will live on through his children and will console you and provide comfort to you. We offer our deepest sympathies.

It was with great sadness and shock that we heard of Marks untimely death. He was a good friend for a long long time. Although we haven't kept in touch for the past little while, we do have some great memories of Mark. In fact just the other night, Scotchy ( another old friend) and I were sharing some old memories of Mark and ourselves over a few beer. Well three hours later and a few more beer we were still at it. Great times!! To all the family, Francis, sons, daughters, brothers, sister, and grandchildren, our deepest sympathy. He will be in our thoughts and prayers as will you all!Unfortunetly, travel at this time is not possible for us. We wish you well on Tuesday and the days and months to follow.

To all of Mark's family, I offer my sincere condolences. I knew Mark from his military service in Cape Breton. A bright man, a good leader, but most of all, a kind man who treated others as he would like to be treated. He had an infectious and genuine smile, and I recall his sincere joy as he spoke of his family. Rest in Peace, Colonel.
