Obituary of Dorothy McNeill
The passing of Dorothy Ruth (Saunders) McNeill, age 97, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Monday, April 14, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Woodlands, NB on February 11, 1917, the oldest daughter of the late Leslie and Nellie (Brewer) Saunders. She received her early education in Woodlands and attended Provincial Normal School in Fredericton, graduating in 1936. She taught one year in a one room school in North Tay, NB. She married Bruce William McNeill of Burtt’s Corner on November 12, 1938 and moved to Nashwaaksis where they raised their family. She returned to teaching in 1958 at Nashwaaksis Memorial School where she taught for nine years. She was later employed by the Federal Government until her retirement at age 65. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Nashwaaksis and a charter member of the Guild. She was recognized as an honorary member of the Welsh Society. Dorothy enjoyed knitting, quilting, baking and traveling.
Dorothy is survived by daughters, Sandra (Peter) Currie, Kathy (Stephen) Smith; sons, Wayne (Marilyn), Gary (Jana) and Laurie ( Sharon); daughter- in-law, Pearl; grandchildren, Jeff (Tami), Greg (Stacey), Mark (Michelle) McNeill, Sheila Gregg, Michael McNeill, Patricia (Henry), Maiorino, Karen (Chris) Howland, Michelle (Chris) Boreland, Kathy (Peter) Beckwith, Kim Castor, Cheryl (Bruce) Saunders, Kevin McNeill, Elise, Tammy (Tony) Bartlett, Emily, Nathan McNeill, Adam, Patrick, Meghan Smith; 27 great grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Holyoke, Enid Pugh; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Saunders, Marion McNeill; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Bruce McNeill (1974), she was predeceased by son, Wendell McNeill (2011); sisters, Muriel Ashfield, Klyne Wilkins, Helen Jacobs; brothers, Wilson, Ian, Murray and Irvine Saunders.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Friday, April 18, 2014 from 4-8 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 11 am with Rev. Canon Bill MacMullin officiating and assisted by Rev. Peter Beckwith. Interment will take place in Burtt’s Corner Community Cemetery at a later date. The Pallbearers and Honourary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
