Obituary of Ralph Carruthers

Carruthers, Ralph Chester Ralph Carruthers of Fredericton, NB, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on Friday, March 07, 2014. Loving father and devoted husband, he will be sorely missed by his wife, Etta and his 11 children. Born in New Annan, NS on December 30, 1917, he was the son of the late Edward and Irene (Wilson) Carruthers. He apprenticed as a machinist at the Oxford Foundary and Machine Works in Oxford, NS. As a machinist he worked for a number of years as a founder and partner of Truro Machine Works. He later joined CNR as a machinist for a number of years. He concluded his working career with 25 years of service in the Engineering Department at the University of New Brunswick. Ralph is survived by his siblings, Laurie Carruthers (Joyce), Hazel Beebe (Brenton), Hilda Wilson (Graham), Phyllis Carruthers and Helen Hanson (Richard). He was the loving father of Gary (Gail), Ken (Beverly), Doug (Dale), Paul, Edward (Ellen), Lee (Sheryl), Stephen (Sandra), Coleen Reid (Norman), Garth (Diana) and Dale Carruthers; he leaves 25 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his infant daughter, Sharon Mae; siblings, Bernice Beebe, Muriel Blanchard (Edward), Leslie Carruthers (Wilma), Ray Carruthers (Margaret) and Sadie Hanson (Harry); infant great grandson, Caleb Longworth. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Funeral Service will be held from York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 2 pm with Mr. Don Longworth officiating. Honorary Pallbearers for the service will be Jamie Carruthers, Scott Carruthers, Andrew Carruthers, Luke Carruthers, Tim Carruthers, Brett Reid, Zach Carruthers and Wilson Carruthers. Interment will take place in Seymour Memorial Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
