Obituary of Frank McCormick
The death of Frank James McCormick of Fredericton, NB, occurred at the Ridgewood DVA Veteran's Wing on Friday, January 17, 2014. Born in Moncton, NB, on Nov.26, 1920 to Archibald and Annie (Wilson) McCormick, Frank graduated from high school and days after his nineteenth birthday boarded a troopship to go overseas. While serving in England he met the love of his life, Vera Burgess. They married in 1941 and began an amazing 72 year marriage. In 1943 Frank left for Sicily, and he and Vera were apart for the next two years, during which time he served in Italy was hospitalized in North Africa, and then served throughout Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.
In 1945 Frank and his English wife arrived in Moncton, and began their next adventure, raising two children and moving to Fredericton in 1956. He continued to serve in the army until 1960, and thereafter worked for some time at the Fredericton Daily Gleaner and later Levines on Queen Street. He dealt with severe health problems for many years but he retained his sense of humour and quick wit. He and Vera had a wide circle of friends, mainly fellow veterans and their British wives, and their home on Willow Avenue was the scene of some amazing parties.
Frank was a member of the 2nd Field Regiment Overseas Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4, Fredericton.
In recent years he and Vera moved to an apartment and met new friends, but both had to deal with poor health, and in October, 2013, Vera passed away. Almost three months to the day later, Frank joined her again.
Frank is survived by his son, Terry (Rosalie) of Florenceville, NB; his daughter, Lindsay Bowen (David) of Saint John, NB; his five grandchildren, Dr.Craig McCormick (Andrea) of Halifax, NS; Derek Bowen (Tammy Thibodeau-Haywood) of Nerepis, NB; Jeremy Ross McCormick (Ashlee Agnew) of Fredericton, NB; Jill Kearney (Ron) of Saint John, NB; Colin McCormick (Michelle Tippitt) of Toronto, ON, and eight great-grandchildren, Sophie and Finnian of Halifax, NS; Ethen, Kole, Matthew and Hayden of Saint John, NB; Connor of Sussex, NB and Gabriel of Fredericton, NB.
Special thanks and appreciation are extended to the staff of the Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the exceptional care and treatment given to Frank while he was a resident at the facility, and to care giver Sadie Osmond for the wonderful and loving care provided Frank and Vera in Fredericton.
