Obituary of Daniel Atkins
Atkins, Daniel Mark (1949-2013)
It is with profound sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Daniel “Dan” Atkins of Fredericton, NB on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Dan grew up in Moncton, NB; he was an avid and accomplished basketball player at Harrison Trimble High School. He continued his studies and his basketball at St. Thomas University, from which he graduated in 1971. “Big Dan” made many friends with his easy going manner during a long journey through intermediate and Masters Levels of hoops. He had many fond memories of road trips with his basketball buddies. Dan married his wife, Alice in 1988 and embarked on a lifetime in which they were one another’s best friend and companion, they became proud parents of their son, Conor Mark. Dan joined the Knights of Columbus and found strength in his faith and fellowship of his fellow Knights; he was a member of the Father Bernard F. McMahon Council; the Dr. G. Everett Grant 4th Degree Assembly, Past District Deputy and Director on the Provincial Executive Council. He and Alice enjoyed the many Knights of Columbus activities around the Province. Dan was a faithful member of St. Theresa’s Parish and was most recently employed with Bird-Stairs. Dan was a kind and gentle man, a beloved husband, father, brother, son and friend, and will be mourned by all.
In addition to his wife, Alice Roy-Atkins, Dan is survived by his son, Conor Mark; mother, Frances Atkins; siblings, Andrew (Joan), Paul, Brian and Rosemary Boyle (Gary); sister in law, Jeannette Roy; brother in law, Leonard Roy (Trudy); mother in law, Maria Roy; good friend, Skip MacGregor; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Ledwell “Laddy” Atkins and his father in law, Omer Roy.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. All members of the Knights of Columbus are asked to assemble at 6:45 pm for a Prayer Service. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Theresa’s Parish on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11 am with Father John Jennings as celebrant. For those who wish, remembrances in Dan’s name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or the charity of the donor’s choice.
