Obituary of Lawrence Palmer

The passing of Lawrence (Laurie) Merritt Palmer, husband of the late Freda (Dobson) Palmer, occurred on Monday, November 25, 2013 at the Veteran’s Health Unit, Fredericton, NB. Born on February 13, 1919 in Astle, NB, he was the son of the late Ernest and Jane (Hovey) Palmer. Laurie was a Veteran of WWII, having served with the Carleton York Regiment. He was a retired Iron Worker for Cives Steel in Augusta, ME. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends at his camp. He was also an avid woodworker - his bowls, clocks and candle holders cherished by many. He will be remembered by family and friends for his sense of humor and his zest for life. Lawrence is survived by his sons, Melvin Palmer (Marla) of Dorchester, MA, Richard Palmer (Brenda) of Winthrop, ME and John Palmer of Grand Manan, NB; daughters, Shirley Collins (Neil) of Onset, MA and Joan Rock (Perry) of Hampden, ME; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters, Doris Whittingham (Thomas) of Calgary, AB and Mavis Dobson (Kenneth) of Taymouth, NB; several nieces and nephews. As well, he leaves behind a compassionate group of caregivers and staff at the Veteran’s Health Unit. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Gloria Jean Palmer; three sisters, Cora Hunter, Lalah Wasson and Janette Palmer; six brothers, George, Forrest, Berne, Donald, Otto and John Palmer. A gathering with reception will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at 11 am. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Normandy Branch # 78 and Fredericton Branch # 4 are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 12:45 pm for a Legion Tribute Service. Interment will take place in the Astle Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Veteran’s Health Unit, 700 Priestman Street, Fredericton, NB E3B 3B7.
